This is a skilled worker who performs installation, maintenance, adjustments, modifications, and repairs, of diesel engine driven stand-by generators, pumps, and related equipment; performs preventive maintenance on, and replacement or repair of diesel engines, gas engines, generators, pumps, controls, and towing appurtenances; checks tires, coolant, and water and oil levels and other systems. This position requires the constant upkeep of the Broward County's Generator fleet due to the importance of this equipment especially before during and after a storm event or other emergency. Must be able to work independently.
General Description
Performs skilled technical work in the maintenance, adjustment, repair, installation, of diesel and gas driven portable and stationary stand-by generators and pumps.
Works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Requires two (2) years technical experience in diesel engine repair and maintenance or closely related experience.
Special Certifications and Licenses
Possess and maintain a valid Florida Class E Driver's License based on area of assignment.
Preferences
- Vocational/Technical School Certification in mechanical, electrical Engineering, or a closely related field
- Associates Degree or higher in mechanical, electrical Engineering, or a closely related field
- CDL B license with air brake endorsement or higher
- Maintenance skills with hydraulic, plumbing, electrical, or instrumentation as demonstrated by vendor certification
- One year or more in electrical knowledge as it relates to generators
- One year or more of experience working with small engine or confined spaces.
Position Duties
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.
Performs installation, maintenance, adjustments, modifications, and repairs, of diesel and gas engine driven stand-by generators, pumps, and related equipment; performs preventive maintenance on, and replacement or repair of diesel engines, gas engines, generators, pumps, controls, and towing appurtenances; checks tires, coolant, and water and oil levels and other systems during deployment.
Ensures work is accomplished in a safe and efficient manner; ensures the quality of work performed; makes repairs and adjustments on diesel and gas generators and pumps and related equipment.
Ensures equipment availability is adequate to meet the operational needs; orders replacements parts when necessary for diesel and gas generators and pumps and related equipment.
Leads the proactive maintenance efforts of the organization for diesel and gas generators and pumps and related equipment.
Monitors equipment performance utilizing the Computerized Maintenance Management System; maintains, calibrates, repairs, and troubleshoots a variety of electrical, electronic, and hydraulic/pneumatic control systems for diesel and gas generators and pumps and related equipment.
Serves as lead worker to plan and assign the work of subordinates and instruct them in proper work methods and procedures.
Performs related work as assigned.

Physical Demands
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
Performs medium to heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 to 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.

Involves routine and frequent exposure to toxic/caustic chemicals.
