About the Department

We are seeking an experienced
We are seeking an experienced Journeyman Electrician to join our team at the Port of Portland, working specifically within our marine terminal operations. In this critical role, you will be responsible for maintaining and repairing electrical systems and equipment that support the smooth functioning of port activities, including cranes, conveyors, lighting, and other terminal infrastructure.

Note: This is a seasonal opportunity with an expected sunset date after 6 to 8 weeks of employment. 

Position Duties

  • Work hours typically fall between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with rotating shifts that may include nights and weekends. Overtime is required.
  • Perform maintenance of electrical control systems on Port of Portland container cranes. 
    • Troubleshoot and repair large direct current (DC) motors and DC motor controls.
    • Troubleshoot electrical and electronic controls, including relay logic, Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) programming, and radio and/or micro-wave controls. 
    • Perform maintenance of electrical distribution systems from voltages that range from 120 to 12.5KV volt branch circuits.
  • Repair and/or replace any and all electrical systems at Marine facilities.
  • Install and start-up new equipment, associated feeders, branch circuits, and controls.
  • Gate receipt check in, plug/unplug, and monitor refrigerated containers. Maintain accurate temperature records.
Note: If you are a Journeyman Electrician licensed in Arkansas, Idaho, Maine, Montana, Utah or Wyoming please let us know when you submit your application.  The State of Oregon will grant reciprocity from these six states and you may qualify for a reciprocal license. If selected for this position, the Port of Portland will cover the cost of your reciprocal license application fee.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Oregon State General Journeyman license at time of hire is required.
  • Experience and/or course work in technical electronics is preferred. 
  • Knowledge of PLC based control systems is preferred; specifically ABB/General Electric is preferred.
  • Knowledge of the following:
    • Variable frequency drives 
    • Closed-circuit television systems and camera controls 
    • Engine powered generators
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Driver's License is required.
  • Employees in this position must be required to successfully pass and maintain security clearance relevant to assigned duties such as SIDA (Security Identification Display Area), TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential), CJIS (Criminal Justice Information Systems), etc. 
Demonstrated Skills:
  • Troubleshoot PLC and DC motor drives and controls, electrical troubleshooting, use of various testing equipment, HVAC controls, range of work on different voltages, CCTV and camera control, fire alarm maintenance, and work with fiber optics and coax cable applications. 
  • Adept at expressing ideas clearly both verbally and in writing.
  • Promote safety as a guiding principle and a regular practice in accomplishing work.
  • Proven team player who shows the utmost respect for others.
Ability to:
  • Work outdoors year-round and at high elevations, as needed. 
  • Read and understand electrical prints and technical manuals.
  • Perform routine tasks with manual dexterity, physical coordination, and stamina.
  • Work independently or effectively in collaboration with team members.
  • Proficient at using computers as trouble shooting tools.
  • Demonstrate commitment to valuing differences among individuals and passion for being inclusive.
