POSITION SUMMARY

The Specialty Clerk creates a phenomenal shopping experience for Co-op customers by upholding the cooperative values and supporting the cooperative principles through exceptional customer service. This position works cutting, wrapping, and stocking cheese, and stocking beer and wine as well as maintaining cleanliness and food safety standards. Most importantly, the Specialty Clerk will make all our customers feel welcome by acknowledging or greeting each customer and providing genuine, helpful, and respectful customer service based on the ethical values of cooperatives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Uphold all Co-op policies, procedures, and expectations.
  2. Customer Experience
    1. Greet customers and provide friendly, helpful, courteous, and prompt customer service based on individual customer needs and wants.
    2. Create a uniquely valuable shopping experience and more fully engage our customers by seeking out information and assistance from others to meet customer needs and exceed customer expectations.
    3. Recommend suitable options based on customer preferences, provide tasting samples, and answer questions about ingredients and sourcing.
    4. Lead customers to product and product information locations in the store upon request.
    5. Help customers make product selections by answering questions and providing information about all beer, wine, and cheese items.
  3. Department Operations
    1. Order, receive, and merchandise wine, beer, cheese, and olive products following proper guidelines for merchandising, rotation, sanitation, pricing, mechanizing, and organic quality standards.
    2. Consistently replenish products to ensure freshness and visibility.
    3. Accept, order, receive, stock, and retrieve special orders.
    4. Follow proper procedures for opening and closing.
    5. Maintain inventory of products and supplies.
    6. Handle product returns from customers and arrange returns and credits to vendors.
    7. Conduct price changes and signage orders following department procedures.
    8. Ensure accurate and sanitary product processing, packaging, labeling, dating, and pricing according to department procedures.
    9. Maintain a working knowledge of all items, ingredients, vendors, and products in all Specialty Department areas.
    10. Prioritize time to ensure that prep work, receiving, stocking, cleaning, and customer service are handled efficiently.
    11. Receive orders, weigh in product, inspect for quality, record date received, and fill out receiving reports and other paperwork as needed.
    12. Clean and maintain work areas, including floors, facilities, utensils, and equipment; collect and place garbage, recycling, and compostable items in designated containers.
    13. Follow department procedures for processing known loss, invoices, special orders, and transfers.
    14. Rotate all product using first in, first out (FIFO).
    15. Safe and proper use of equipment, and only use equipment you have been trained to use safely.
    16. Check chemical sanitation levels (PPM) on sanitizer buckets, and report all discrepancies to management.
    17. Properly handle all chemical and sanitation products.
    18. Monitor and record food time and temperatures according to department procedures.
    19. Be responsive and proactive with vendors
  4. Clerk Duties
    1. Adhere to scheduled shifts and be ready for work when shift begins.
    2. Wear proper clothing during shift and adhere to the dress code.
    3. Maintain accurate and attractive signage within your department.
    4. Keep your department orderly and clean.
  5. Other Duties
    1. Assist in inventory counts, storewide cleaning, and other projects as needed.
    2. Attend meetings and events as requested.
    3. Adhere to department dress code.
    4. Demonstrate support for the cooperative values and principles daily.
    5. Perform other duties and work in other departments as assigned.

Qualifications


ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Required Experience
    1. Customer Service experience.
  2. Regulatory Requirement 
    1. Maintain and update as needed California Food Handler’s Certification.
  3. Language Ability
    1. Read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos.
    2. Communicate effectively and respectfully in oral or written form to staff and customers of diverse backgrounds.
    3. Effectively present information in one-to-one and small group situations to customers and other employees.
  4. Math Ability
    1. Add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s mentally.
    2. Perform these calculations using units of U.S. currency and weight measurement, volume and distance.
    3. Read and follow standard recipe.
    4. Measure, mix, and prepare raw ingredients according to company specifications and recipes.
  5. Reasoning Ability
    1. Apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.
    2. Deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
    3. Prioritize work tasks, multi-task, and maintain focus.
  6. Computer Skills
    1. Use Email, website, and time clock software proficiently.
  7. Education
    1. High school diploma, GED, or equivalent certificate.

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Desired knowledge, skills, ability and experience are not essential to be able to perform the essential duties of the position. 

  1. Knowledge and experience in an industry involving beer, wine, spirits, and cheese.
  2. Experience working with vendors.
