Hoonah City Schools Additional Information: Show/Hide - Work with all school staff to develop a positive school climate.
- Act as the Instructional Leader for K-12 with special focus on reading instruction and intervention.
- Regularly access and implement the K-12 assessment program including state required testing. This includes follow up to inform instruction and professional development.
- Work with the school counselor and staff to establish effective anti-bullying programs, student service programs, and social skills development programs
- Address daily behavioral problems with students referred to the office.
- Assist teachers in establishing effective classroom management strategies designed to reduce negative and increase positive student behaviors in the classroom. Familiarity with PBIS desirable.
- Ensure creation and maintenance of accurate, secure, and appropriate student behavior, discipline and attendance records.
- Communicate student issues and needs with parents in a timely fashion beginning with personal communications followed up with letters as needed.
- Make home visits with students whenever needed.
- Follow rules, policies, procedures and practices set forth in the Parent/Student Handbook, Hoonah Negotiated Agreements, Standard Operating Procedures and HCSD Board Policies.
- Strives to find alternatives to in-school and out-of-school suspension.
- Lead the development and implementation of HCSD professional development activities.
- Lead the School/District Improvement Team.
- Supervise and evaluate the School Custodial Staff.
- Supervise and evaluate the Student Nutrition Services staff.
- Assist in the coordination of the School Activities program with the Activities Director.
- Oversee the programs and operation of the HCSD Special Services Program.
- Attends all IEP meetings.
- Oversee the operation and implementation of school cultural programs.
- Develop relationships with local agencies including Native organizations and the City of Hoonah.
- Ensure that HCSD grant programs function according to the respective grants.
- Other duties as may be assigned.
- Maintains a positive mental attitude as it relates to students, staff, administration and school board.

Holds a current Alaska Type B Certificate as a pre K-12 Principal.
Demonstrates successful experience as a pre-K 12 Principal.
Successful rural educational experiences or can demonstrate the ability and knowledge to work with Native Alaskan students and all students in an isolated and rural setting.
Adjusts physically and mentally to challenging and remote environments.
Demonstrates proficiency in use and integration of technology in the classroom and in CTE.

JOB PURPOSE: To work collaboratively with the Superintendent and Staff and use leadership, supervisory, and administrative skills to promote the most effective educational program at Hoonah City School.
Duties, Responsibilities and Accountabilities
Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as curricula guides and materials and testing protocols. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence needed.
Ability to speak effectively before colleagues.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to apply mathematical functions in routine classroom situations such as calculation of grades.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems in a professional manner.
Computer Skills and Abilities: Requires knowledge and ability to operate a variety of software on computers. Experience with Mac platform, Powerschool, and email systems beneficial.
Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to develop effective working relationships with Board of Education, superintendent, colleagues, students and community. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies. Ability to work in a cross-cultural environment.
