Job Description:

The Senior Research and Development Engineer will be part of the Neuro Thromboembolic Initiative (NTI). NTI is a unique and exciting group of engineers and scientists at J&J MedTech Galway, dedicated to understanding more about neurovascular diseases by conducting basic research and by development of models and other tests that can be used to simulate and understand the underlying disease.

The Senior Research and Development Engineer will provide inputs to the research and development team and the wider business by setting up and running research projects relating to cerebral diseases and their treatment. Clear establishment of the link between the research carried out and final medical device design is a critical part of the role. Communication to internal partners and to physicians requires the individual to be authoritative on the companies research and the state of the art of global research activity in the field.

What you will be doing:

Develop a deep understanding of disease states, physician (user) techniques and acts as a subject matter authority in these areas.

  • Conduct research internally or using external sources to meet R&D needs in the development of devices for treatment of neurovascular diseases.
  • Work with other team members on research planning, execution, analysis and reporting as needed.
  • Collaborate externally with physicians and academics, and internally with R&D, Clinical, Medical Affairs, Marketing, and other business partners to understand unmet needs.
  • Provide meaningful output that can be utilised by product development teams, e.g. analysis of data from literature, in-vitro test model development, in vitro and in vivo pre-clinical experiments, and test protocol development.
  • Work to project timelines, ensure accurate completion of activities, ensure project reviews are timely, effectively communicate project updates, risks, and issues to management on a timely basis.
  • Remain current on the constantly evolving landscape of neurovascular disease research in search of better strategies for prioritising our portfolio based on treatment insights.
  • Publish original research in relevant, peer-reviewed medical, engineering or scientific journals.
  • Present work at international congresses as part of Industry symposia or Scientific Programmes.
  • Acquire an in-depth knowledge of current products from a technical point of view: design, materials, performances, manufacturing process.
  • Provide direction to other team members, including mentoring and oversight of less experienced engineers or technicians.
  • Support regulatory submissions.
  • Support to Sales and Marketing for product characterization, competitive testing and field training.
  • Leverage and liaise with external resources, including suppliers, to achieve project goals.
  • Write procedures, protocols, specifications, and reports.
  • Support development of marketing materials (presentations/videos/demos).
  • Ensure personal and company compliance with all Federal, State, local and company regulations, policies and procedures for Environmental, Health and Safety.
  • Other duties as assigned or required.

What you will bring:

Required:

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in Medical Devices, Cardiovascular or Neurovascular implants or instruments including catheters, stents, or delivery systems.
  • Advanced degree in Engineering or Science.
  • Strong design and technical ability based on a broad and deep knowledge of fundamental engineering principles.
  • Data review and statistical methods skills (Minitab).
  • Strong work ethic, creative problem solving, capable of working on own initiative.
  • Excellent writing, presentation, and verbal communication skills essential.
  • Results and deadline driven with an ability to handle multiple tasks and operate in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with people to achieve results.
  • Highly motivated and an enthusiastic self-starter with the ability to work under own initiative and as a team player.

Preferred:

  • Experience in neurovascular disease and its treatment.
  • Development of in-vitro test methods for evaluation of medical devices.
  • Leadership experience of small teams, and/or coaching and mentoring would be advantageous.

Job location:

The role is based in Galway, Ireland and is likely to involve moderate EMEA and International travel.
