About the Role


We are seeking an Animal Care Technician II for the daily care of research laboratory animals, to ensure their health and welfare within the public health sector for our federal customer. 


This role involves providing routine animal care and husbandry duties, along with reviewing, monitoring, and documenting the health and physical conditions of the animals while practicing infection control.


This is a fully onsite position at our customer's location in Atlanta, Georgia. This position is contingent on contract award. 


Responsibilities

  • Conduct animal husbandry duties such as preparing, changing cages for small and large animals, feeding, manually watering, or monitoring/testing automatic watering devices and other technical procedures with minimal supervision.  
  • Handle and restrain animals.
  • Maintain accurate records of all the feeding and watering performed. 
  • Check each lixit and watering device twice daily and immediately replace any lixits that are leaking or nonfunctioning, along with any cage latches that are missing, bent, or not properly fastened.
  • Conduct daily health assessments of animals and promptly communicate any signs of illness or unusual behavior to the appropriate personnel.
  • Provide environmental enrichment feed and other enrichment stimuli, and/ or provides behavioral assessments.
  • Monitor and reports of any irregularities in the animal environment or any conditions that may affect animals.
  • Ensure that all logbooks, checklists and other records are completed accurately in a timely fashion.
  • Support the intake and accommodation of incoming animals.
  • Facilitate the safe and efficient transport of animals, materials, and waste across designated work zones.
  • Conduct quality checks such as temperature and basic water analysis.
  • May train and mentor junior staff.
  • Carry out assigned duties in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as standard operating procedures and specific protocol requirements.
  • Support ABSL-3 and ABSL-4 laboratory operations.
  • Perform other related responsibilities as required.

Requirements


Required Experience and Skills

  • 2-3 years of experience working with laboratory animals or related work. 
  • Previous experience working with and handling laboratory animal species, most applicable to rodents and non-human primates, preferred.
  • Experience in ABSL–3 or ABSL-4 laboratories.
  • Be able to don and doff the required Personal Protective Equipment. 
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and standard procedures
  • Ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Ability to identify and address issues and deficiencies and implement effective solutions according to guidelines.
  • Follow safety procedures and ensure standard policies and practices are followed.
  • Ability to obtain government clearance.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a clear and satisfactory driving record.
  • Must be able to wear a respirator.
  • Will be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.

Education and Training

  • High school diploma or General Education Degree (G.E.D.)

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 55 pounds (25 kilograms) frequently. 
  • Strength and agility to capture, restrain and carry medium sized mammals without causing harm to the animal or self.
  • Must have no known allergies to animals, feed, or chemicals
  • Walking, reaching, bending, and stooping.
  • May be exposed to Hazardous materials and will be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to protect against exposure to pathogens and chemicals.
  • Ability to obtain necessary immunizations against vaccine-preventable diseases relevant to laboratory placement, including Hepatitis B, among others.
  • Ability to obtain respiratory clearance and fit testing may be required.
  • Must be able to work with hazardous chemicals and potentially infectious biological agents.
