The Director of Transportation Management will lead the strategic and operational management of transportation and logistics functions across the building materials supply chain.

 

This role is responsible for ensuring the efficient, cost-effective, and timely movement of raw materials and finished goods to distribution centers, retail locations, and job sites. The ideal candidate will have deep experience in freight management, fleet operations, and logistics optimization within the building materials or construction supply industry.

 

The Director of Transportation Management will report directly to the VP of Supply Chain and will coordinate with many other departments to ensure an efficient daily workflow for both Inbound and Outbound shipments for the Associated Materials Innovations products.

 

This role will drive the development, procurement, and sustainability of a service provider network to meet and exceed the requirements of our customer base.

Key Accountabilities

  • Oversee the daily transportation metrics across multiple locations, five (5) window plants, three (3) vinyl plants, two (2) metal plants and Regional Distribution Center
  • Partner with Dedicated Carrier to drive compliance with a core carrier routing strategy, while managing transportation cost, quality, delivery, and service to expected levels
  • Develop Requests for Quotations; and negotiate the best value possible; utilize customer routing mechanisms
  • Provide continuous operational improvement by ensuring contracted carriers deliver in accordance with company standards, policies, and committed service levels
  • Develop market intelligence program that benchmarks key performance indicators/market price to ensure accurate price forecasting and risk mitigation
  • Review and negotiate Master Transportation Agreements, contract terms and conditions in concert with corporate legal
  • Audit and ensure timeliness of rates and payments in line with negotiated carrier rates
Day to Day Responsibilities
  • Directing oversight activities related to planning, routing, and tracking of dedicated and outsourced carrier fleet
  • Planning, organizing, and managing subordinate staff members to ensure work is completed and consistent with company standards
  • Review and validate daily transportation metrics across multiple locations, including, on-time to pull, on-time delivery, overall trailer utilization, and dwell time
  • Review and negotiate new carrier contracts as required while optimizing Cost, Quality, and Delivery of products across the network
  • Manage existing carrier contracts ensuring compliance
  • Key in driving tactical and strategic initiatives

 

Required Education, Skills & Experience

 

  • Bachelor's degree in supply chain management, Logistics, Business Administration, or related field (Master's preferred).
  • 10+ years of experience in transportation and logistics, with at least 5 years in a leadership role within the building materials or construction supply industry.
  • Strong understanding of freight logistics for heavy, bulky, and time-sensitive materials.
  • Experience with fleet management, TMS, MRP, ERP and JIT inventory practices is highly desirable
  • Excellent leadership, negotiation, and communication skills.
  • Manufacturing experience desired
  • Vendor management/qualification experience required
  • Exceptional negotiation and transportation pricing strategy skills
  • Strong leadership and communication skills with a team-first mentality
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills
  • Advanced skillset in MS Office applications (Excel)

Other Key Responsibilities

 

  • Strategic Leadership
    • Develop and implement transportation and logistics strategies that support business growth, customer satisfaction, and operational efficiency.
    • Align logistics operations with seasonal demand cycles and construction project timelines.
  • Operations Management
    • Oversee inbound and outbound transportation of bulk and packaged building materials including lumber, concrete, roofing, drywall, and other heavy goods.
    • Manage third-party carriers to ensure safe, compliant, and timely deliveries.
    • Optimize routing and load planning to reduce costs and improve delivery performance.
  • Vendor & Carrier Relations
    • Negotiate contracts with freight carriers, 3PLs, and specialized haulers for oversized or hazardous materials.
    • Monitor carrier performance and enforce service level agreements.
  • Compliance & Safety
    • Ensure compliance with DOT regulations, OSHA standards, and environmental requirements related to transportation of building materials.
    • Lead safety initiatives and training programs for drivers and logistics personnel.
  • Financial Oversight
    • Develop and manage transportation budgets, including fuel, maintenance, and freight costs.
    • Identify cost-saving opportunities through mode optimization, backhauls, and strategic sourcing.
