The Maintenance Technician II performs intermediate-level maintenance duties and heavy, manual skilled and semi-skilled work, and independently handles a variety of tasks for different county departments, including Public Works and Parks, Recreation, & Facilities. This position may require some level of technical expertise in equipment and system repairs, dependent on assigned Department/Division, and provides more autonomy than the MT I role.

Position Duties

Maintenance and Repairs:

  • Mowing and other types of landscaping and grounds maintenance at various roadways, County parks and athletic fields, or facilities.  
  • Perform a broad range of repair and maintenance work on equipment and systems, such as electrical, HVAC, plumbing, or road infrastructure, depending on department assignment.
  • Troubleshoot issues and make repairs to a variety of systems and equipment used in public facilities, parks, roads, or buildings.
Preventive Maintenance and Inspections:
  • Implement preventive maintenance schedules for facilities, equipment, or infrastructure.
  • Perform regular inspections to identify potential issues and resolve them proactively.
Team Coordination:
  • Mentor and guide Maintenance Technician I staff, assisting with training on maintenance and groundskeeping tasks.
  • Collaborate with other team members to ensure efficient operations.
Documentation and Reporting:
  • Complete and maintain work orders, ensuring detailed records of tasks and completed repairs.
  • Help track the usage of materials, tools, and equipment.
The following are examples of tasks that may be expected depending on the assigned department. Responsibilities will vary based on the specific needs of each department and the scope of work involved:
  • Public Works: Right of way mowing and maintenance, drainage construction and maintenance, pothole and road repair, and sign installation in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways and FDOT Design Standards.  
  • Parks and Recreation: Irrigation system maintenance, landscaping equipment repair, minor building repairs in public facilities.
  • Facilities: HVAC maintenance, repairing electrical systems, ensuring plumbing systems in county buildings function properly.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The Maintenance Technician roles require the ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting heavy objects frequently, carrying tools and equipment, and standing or walking for extended periods. Technicians must be capable of bending, stooping, reaching, and climbing as needed for maintenance tasks. The position may involve working in various positions, including crouching or kneeling, and requires manual dexterity for the use of tools and machinery. Employees must also be able to carry out repetitive tasks that involve physical exertion, such as operating hand tools or handling materials.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS AND WORK HAZARDS: Maintenance Technicians work in a variety of environments, including indoor and outdoor locations. This may involve exposure to weather conditions such as heat, cold, or rain when working outdoors. Technicians may encounter hazardous materials, including chemicals, oils, or cleaning agents, and must follow safety procedures to minimize risks. Work in facilities or on roads in traffic may expose individuals to noise, vibrations, and dust. Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required to mitigate these risks, and employees must adhere to all safety guidelines to ensure a safe work environment.
SAFETY EQUIPMENT & PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE): Employees are required to adhere to all safety protocols and utilize appropriate safety equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) provided to ensure a safe working environment. Specific requirements include:
  • Mandatory PPE: Employees must wear designated PPE, which may include safety goggles, safety vests, safety boots, gloves, hard hats, hearing protection, and respiratory masks, depending on the tasks performed.
  • Safety Training: All employees will receive training on the proper use and maintenance of safety equipment and PPE to minimize risks and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Inspection and Maintenance: Employees are responsible for regularly inspecting their PPE for wear and tear, and reporting any damaged equipment to their supervisor for replacement.
  • Emergency Equipment: Familiarity with the location and use of emergency equipment, such as fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and eyewash stations, is required.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates should possess a solid foundational background that demonstrates their ability to engage with the responsibilities of the role effectively.
General Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; vocational or technical certification in maintenance, construction, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in maintenance, landscaping or facility management. 
  • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and mechanical skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a strong work ethic and attention to detail.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects, perform manual labor, and work in varying weather conditions.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and practices in maintenance work.
  • Valid Florida driver’s license and a good driving record.
Additional Qualifications – Department Specific
Public Works:
  • Experience in maintaining public infrastructure such as streets, sidewalks, stormwater systems, and utilities.
  • Familiarity with groundskeeping tools and equipment such as lawnmowers, trimmers, and chainsaws.
  • Knowledge of asphalt and concrete repair, patching, and resurfacing techniques.
  • Ability to assist in emergency response situations, including flood control.
  • Traffic Division: Must have or be able to obtain Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) certification during the six (6) month probationary period.  Must have or be able to obtain a Level I Signs & Markings certification within one (1) year of hire. Must be knowledgeable of and proficient with computers, plotters and sign fabrication software.
Parks, Recreation & Facilities:
  • Familiarity with groundskeeping tools and equipment such as lawnmowers, trimmers, and chainsaws.
  • Experience in maintaining public buildings, infrastructure, and outdoor recreational facilities preferred.
  • Ability to operate and maintain specialized equipment for landscaping, tree trimming, irrigation systems, and turf care preferred.
  • Knowledge of horticulture, including the planting, pruning, and care of trees, shrubs, and flowers preferred.

Driving Position – Operating County vehicles and/or equipment is a primary function of this position.
This is a union position.
