Under general supervision this position controls personnel and incarcerated person passage within the Correctional Facility, serves as incarcerated person booking controller, logs and observes persons visiting incarcerated persons, receives the public, answers phone calls, and performs related duties as the need arises. Incumbents work interchangeably in Central Control, the Front Counter, and Booking areas of the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility.Examples of Duties
- Controls security doors and gates into and within the Correctional Facility
- Monitors security cameras used for jail security and reports activities that indicate security problems
- Monitors the radio system and all facility emergencies
- Log safety checks and enter incident reports in JMS
- Assists correctional officers in booking and releasing incarcerated persons
- Receives and searches personal belongings of arrestees; receives money for incarcerated persons and provides receipts; maintains accurate accounts of incarcerated person funds
- Maintains incarcerated person statistics. Calculates and maintains incarcerated person release dates
- Processes and enters court documents
- Operates a computer system to access information on previous arrests, outstanding warrants, and the status of incarcerated persons.
- Files, updates, and purges booking and arrest records of all persons arrested and booked into the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility.
- Accepts bail and processes bail forms; verifies bail bonds to ensure all information is accurate; deposits bail and provides receipts
- Receives public, professional, and official visitors for incarcerated persons; receives and refers telephone calls as needed, and provides the public and other individuals and agencies with accurate information
- Provides information and assistance to the general public about the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility.
- Logs and observes persons visiting incarcerated persons.
- Opens and scans incarcerated person mail and packages to search for checks, books, monies and contraband
- Performs related job duties as assigned
- Practical public relations, computer terminals, clerical, financial, and legal record-keeping practices and procedures

- Principles and procedures used in the security of a correctional facility
- Correctional facility security measures and warrant procedures
- Basic California Codes relating to legal procedures and terminology
- Penal, Health and Safety, Welfare and Institution Codes and Code of Civil Procedure
- State and local rules of court and procedures for court commitments, warrants, extradition and bail
- Information required on warrants filed and issued by the court
- Legal documents associated with civil process
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
- Must remain seated for long periods of time and operate the Correctional Facility security control console. All positions involve reaching, bending, grasping, lifting up to 25 pounds, hand and eye coordination, and manual dexterity necessary to operate buttons, switches, keyboards, telephones, and teletype, copy and photographic machines.
- Work is performed in a closed, secured, and often stressful environment, which may include exposure to communicable diseases and violent behavior.
- Incumbents may be required to work shifts, weekends and holidays.
- Some accommodations may be made for some physical demands for otherwise qualified individuals who require and request such accommodations.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must submit to and pass a psychological evaluation, medical examination, voice stress test, and a background investigation.
- Conviction by any state, the federal government or a foreign government of a crime that could have been punishable by imprisonment in a federal or state prison is disqualifying.
