The American School for the Deaf (ASD) is the oldest school for the deaf, founded in 1817 by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc. The American School for the Deaf is committed to serving deaf and hard of hearing infants, youth, and their families in development of intellect and the enhancement of quality of life utilizing specially designed instruction through an American Sign Language and English Bilingual Approach, empowering them to become educated and self-directed life-long learners.
ASD is located in West Hartford, a town recognized as one of the top ten towns for raising families. West Hartford residents value education, evidenced by the high quality of public and private schools. There is also much to do in West Hartford. There is a wide array of parks and recreation. There are pools and hiking trails. There are historic sites to visit as well. SCOPE OF DUTIES
Summary:
Under the supervision of the PACES Assistant Principal and Clinical Social Work Coordinator, the Coordinator of Student Support Services assists with daily operations and efficient management of the school. The Coordinator of Student Support Services is responsible for student discipline and safety in order to enhance the overall school culture and maximize student engagement and learning.
PRIMARY DUTIES
- Maintains and supports effective behavior management in the school program. May manage, organize and participate in student hearings on disciplinary matters. This includes documentation for the school and state.
- Recommends, administers, and enforces building policies and procedures related to student behavior management.
- Provides coaching support to faculty for developing and implementing classroom-based behavior management responses.
- Organizes and coordinates academic intervention programs for students including working lunch and assigned study halls and in-school suspension when applicable.
- Manages and implements progressive responses to behavior disruptions according to ASD’s Student Code of Conduct.
- Maintains disciplinary files and exercises appropriate leadership in processing student behavioral problems including accurate record keeping of infractions.
- Communicates with parents regarding student behaviors and school events.
- Oversees bus arrivals and dismissals.
- Supervises and evaluates Residential Counselors and Teacher Aides.
- Conducts disciplinary meetings for staff and maintains records of meetings.
- Sends daily school log to appropriate school personnel and dorm staff.
- Manages daily staffing schedule including lunch duty.
- Manages playground area: safety and maintenance reports as needed.
- Coordinates release time activities.
- Assists in the planning and implementation of the school’s emergency preparedness program.
- Serves as a member of the Positive Behavioral Supports Intervention Strategy (PBIS) leadership team.
- Coordinates supporting cultural and extracurricular events that enhance the student experience-PBIS privileges, fun school-day events, etc.
- Serves as a member of the mid-management team.
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education of the Deaf or related field preferred.
- Minimum of five years’ experience in a deaf education environment.
- Supervision experience preferred.
- Understanding of Restorative Practices, PBIS, Trauma Informed Care, SIS, or willingness to learn.
- Good judgment. Ability to work in a collaborative team setting.
- Ability to work flexible hours when needed.
- ASL proficiency, or willingness to learn.
SALARY AND BENEFITS:
- 12-months, benefits eligible
- Compensation range is based on experience and available upon request
