There are immediate openings for the position of Forensic Evidence Technician with the Sheriff's Crime Lab. This list may also be used for future vacancies.

Future Salary Increases

** June 26, 2026 - 5.97% increase to base pay (3.50% Across-the-Board + 2.47% Market Increase)

** June 25, 2027 - 5.47% increase to base pay (3.00% Across-the-Board + 2.47% Market Increase)

The following additional pay incentives and premiums are available:

** Crime Scene Premium of 2.5% above the regular base rate (dependent on organization needs as determined)


About the Position:  

Forensic Evidence Technicians identify, document, collect, preserve, and transport photographic and physical evidence critical to crime scene investigation; and perform related work.
  
 This is a technical class allocated only to the Sheriff's Crime Laboratory. Under the general direction, this class is responsible for identifying, collecting, preserving, and transporting physical evidence from crime scene investigations and autopsies. This class also performs crime scene documentation, fingerprint processing, and photography work.

Education and Experience:

Education, training, and/or experience that demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above. Qualifying education/experience:  

  1. An associate of science degree from an accredited college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency and a community college certificate in Evidence Technology or equivalent, OR,
  2. One (1) year of experience in the identification, documentation, collection, preservation, and transportation of physical evidence which must include fingerprint processing, OR,
  3. Two (2) years of full-time experience as an Evidence Technician in a law enforcement agency.

Condition of Employment:

As part of the County of San Diego’s pre-employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre-employment medical screening before beginning County employment. Additional types of background investigations may be conducted based on the job-related activities of the position.


Evaluation:

Qualified candidates will be placed on a six (6) month employment list based on scores received during the evaluation of information contained in their employment and supplemental applications. Please ensure all information is complete and accurate, as the responses you provide on the supplemental application questionnaire will be reviewed using an automated evaluation system. If you are successful in the initial screening process, your application will be reviewed individually to confirm that the information you provided is accurate and qualifying.
