About the Department
** This position is based in Deming, NM **
Under the direction of the Corre Caminos Director or designee, the transit driver is expected to operate buses of various sizes in accordance to Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
Position Duties
The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or logical assignment to the position.
- Operate assigned bus for the purpose of transporting passengers safely and courteously.
- Obey traffic laws, safety procedures, and transit regulations.
- Follow and adhere to a specific timetable while driving the bus.
- Communicate with dispatch for passenger pick up and drop off locations.
- Assist individuals with physical and/or mental limitations for the purpose of providing access to public transportation, ensuring passenger safety, and providing route and schedule information.
- Inspect buses to insure safe access when boarding and alighting, and as required by law; and report malfunctions and other needed repairs.
- Observe and respond to emergency situations involving passengers, the public, or buses for the purpose of maintaining public/passenger safety, and proper bus operation.
- Will be required to assist with and/or perform duties of other departmental employees
- May be required to work irregular hours, attend job related meetings, and perform all duties with minimal supervision.
- Must be able to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
- Applicant must disclose real or perceived conflicts of interest and must abide by the Governmental Conduct Act.
Non-Essential Functions:
- Perform other required duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Acceptable driving record in accordance to Grant County and Department of Transportation.
- Valid New Mexico State Driver’s License. Must have a good driving record to be insurable for liability purposes.
- Good organizational skills
- Good communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous work experience in operating a public passenger vehicle
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with passenger endorsement
Other Qualifications
Professional Requirements:
- Successful completion of interview by County representative(s) who will measure traits that are significant or necessary to perform the job, and demonstrate the applicant’s ability to relate ideas and answer questions relative to the job.
- Successful completion of required training, including but not limited to Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and Defensive Driving within one year from date of hire.
- Adhere to dress code, business casual dress is neat and clean.
- Report to work on time and as scheduled.
- Represent the County in a positive and professional manner at all times, including use of tact when working with a wide range of individuals, including the public, often under tense circumstances.
- Comply with all County policies and procedures, and standards regarding ethical business practices in accordance with the Governmental Conduct Act.
- Participate in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities.
- Attend regular staff meetings.

Physical Demands:
- Work is performed in a transit vehicle and in a transit operations environment with exposure to all types of weather and traffic conditions.
- The work required light-to-medium physical effort, which includes:
- Frequent bending
- Frequent reaching
- Frequent lifting, pushing, pulling or carrying items waist high, weighing up to 10 pounds
- Occasional lifting, pushing, pulling or carrying items waist high, weighing up to 20 pounds
- Moderate to prolonged walking during site visits
- Coordinated use of eyes, ears, hands and feet to operate a motorized vehicle
- Good vision and hearing
- Work irregular hours including after hours and weekends if needed.
Conditions of Employment:
- Must successfully complete a conditional post-offer of employment physical examination.
- Subject to and must pass a post-offer of employment Drug & Alcohol Analysis Test.
- Following a conditional offer of employment, successfully complete background investigation, which may include, but is not limited to:
- drug & alcohol screen, criminal record search, driving record screening, reference check, and employment verification.
- Must not have any felony convictions related to the position.
Work Conditions/Description of Tools, Equipment, Work Aids Used and Materials and/or Products Handled:
- Office & field environment
- Monday – Friday – 5:15 am – 6:30 pm (alternating shifts/routes)
- Friday and Saturday nights – 5:30 pm – 2:30 am (as needed)
