Reporting to the Assistant Deputy Warden, Operations, the Correctional Supervisor is responsible for the safe and secure custody of clients at the Aaqqigiarvik Correctional Healing Facility, while promoting rehabilitation and reintegration. The position provides direct supervision to 15–19 Correctional Caseworkers per shift, ensuring adequate staffing, programming, training, and staff development to maintain safety and security. As a member of the facility’s leadership team, the Correctional Supervisor contributes to staff resource management, monitors expenditures, and provides direction during emergency situations to safeguard staff and offender safety.

 

Responsibilities

The Correctional Supervisor ensures the safety of society, clients, and staff by monitoring compliance with security standards, maintaining institutional procedures, and overseeing client movement, behaviour, and discipline. The position manages contraband control, conducts facility patrols, and provides guidance to staff in addressing issues beyond their authority. It contributes to case management by assessing clients, providing input on case plans, monitoring programming, and preparing progress reports. The role also processes new admissions outside of administrative hours, including offender risk assessments and related documentation.

In managing staff, the Correctional Supervisor provides direct supervision, feedback, and performance appraisals for Correctional Caseworkers, recommends and delivers training, and sets short-term work priorities. The position fosters a safe and secure work environment, mentors staff, and supports succession planning initiatives.

Qualifications

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a high school diploma or equivalent and three (3) years related correctional facility experience, including one (1) year of supervisory experience. A Class five (5) drivers license is required for this position.  Candidates must also be able to complete the Nunavut Healing and Learning Together (NUHALT) training program and Suicide Intervention training within the six-month probationary period and obtain current First Aid and CPR certification.  This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are considered assets.
