Job Description

CROSSING GUARD

REPORTS To: School Principal

Position Purpose:

Supervises and safeguards students while crossing at a designated crosswalk to assure pedestrian safety and demonstrate proper safety procedures.

NATURE & SCOPE:

Performs work of a routine and recurring nature in accordance with clearly defined procedures and guidelines under continuing supervision.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Oversees students crossing at a crosswalk; assures safety of students.
  2. Instructs students in safety procedures, such as, crossing when green go signal is activated and watching for speeding motorists.
  3. Reports students and motorists disobeying traffic rules and laws to the school principal.
  4. Provides back-up support to other positions in case of absence or work overload.
  5. Performs other related duties as assigned.
 

Working Conditions:

The work is performed primarily outdoors exposing employees to inclement weather and traffic hazards.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of rules, practices and procedures contained in HANDBOOK FOR ADULT CROSSING GUARD, provided by the District.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with other employees and students using tact, courtesy and good judgment.
  • Ability to work with accuracy and attention to detail to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to oversee students at a crosswalk and to identify potentially unsafe conditions.
  • Ability to physically perform assigned duties.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school diploma, or G.E.D., and six months crossing guard experience is desirable; or any combination of education and experience which would provide the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge and ability required to perform the job.
