Title: Director of Food Services
Job Goal:
The Director of Food Service oversees the entire food services operation for the district, including oversight of the district’s food services vendor who administers the overall program including personnel and menu. The Director assures quality and manages budgeting and financial responsibilities. The Director shall be responsible for directing, coordinating, and evaluating the work of the employees of the food services vendor to ensure that the school meal program is in conformance with quality, nutrition, and productivity standards as well as local, state and federal guidelines.
Quali?cations:
- Bachelor’ Degree, from accredited college or university in a related field (i.e. Food & Nutrition, Food Service Management, Dietetics, Family and Consumer Science, Nutrition Education, Culinary Arts, Business or related), preferred.
- Must hold a valid Massachusetts Driver’s License.
- Dietician license preferred.
- “Serv-Safe” Certification Required.
- Minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience preferred.
- Thorough knowledge of the administration, food, equipment, materials, methods and techniques relative to food service operations.
- Knowledge of basic spreadsheet, word processing, and point of sale software, as necessary for the efficient operation of the food service program.
- Experience in scratch cookery and creative menu development.
- Knowledge of large quantity, nutritious meal preparation and menu planning.
- Experience completing accurate state, federal and local applications and reports in a timely manner.
- Experience with procurement procedures. MCPPO certification, desirable.
- Participates in appropriate professional memberships such as School Nutrition Association.
- Serves as a Servsafe proctor.
- Successful completion of CORI and fingerprinting background.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.

Supervises: Food Services Administrative Assistant
Performance Responsibilities:
- Oversees the entire food service operation for the district.
- Approves the vendor’s monthly menus, providing high quality, affordable, nutritious feed that students will enjoy eating.
- Assures that nutritional information is provided on all food items served.
- Coordinates and collaborates with families and school nurses to provide appropriate meals for students with specific medical needs or restrictions.
- Reviews current research to determine health and nutrition-related trends and food service management developments.
- Collaborates with vendor to develop innovative program changes as needed or necessary.
- Knowledgeable of and ability to comply with all requirements/mandates from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), US Department of Agriculture, and the Board of Health.
- Submits monthly claims to DESE.
- Prepares annual DESE NSLP Renewal and DESE Summer Feeding (SFSP) applications.
- Applies for appropriate Federal and state grants.
- Assists families in the completion of Federal free and reduced lunch paperwork for the purposes of District financial assistance.
- Orders food items and supplies as needed, in a cost effective manner and in conformity with the federal and state procurement laws and local procurement policies and procedures.
- Maintain inventories of food, supplies and equipment.
- Manages all food service facilities, including receiving all food and food supplies and distributing food supply and prepared meals between sites.
- Examines all food service areas on a regular basis to determine needed repairs, maintenance or replacement. Develops and maintains and implements a long-term capital plan for food service equipment and facilities.
- Prepares the annual budget for the food service department.
- Reviews vendor financial activity reports monthly; utilizes MUNIS and MySchoolBucks systems to monitor budgets and payments; assists families with payments and refunds.
- Coordinates quarterly and annual financial DESE reporting with Deputy Director for School Finance.
- Supervise, creates and maintains performance standards for the food services administrative assistant.
- Collaborates with the School Committee and Deputy Director for School Finance to negotiate and implement the food services vendor contract.
- Collaborates with District or building administration in providing food services for special events as needed
- Co-chairs the Wellness Advisory Committee.
- Leads the implementation of the Redhawk Food Pantry.
- Performs all other duties prescribed by the Superintendent.
Job Environment:
Work is conducted in a typical school setting. Meetings are held in typical o?ce space. Has access to a
great deal of con?dential information and must maintain confidentiality of student and staff information
relative to federal and state laws and regulations. Must be able to communicate e?ectively in person,
over the phone, and in writing.
Physical Requirements:
Light to moderate physical e?ort required to perform duties. Regular travel throughout the school
district.
Terms of Employment: Independently negotiated full year contract.
