Secondary Physical Education/Health Teacher

Qualifications and Skills: 

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with appropriate certification Code(s)
  • Recent experience or coursework related to instructional practices.
  • Strong organizational skills with a creative and energetic approach to teaching.
  • Comfortable using digital tools and technology in the classroom.
  • Demonstrates integrity, professionalism, and sound judgment.
  • Other qualifications as deemed appropriate by the Superintendent or designee.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement age-appropriate physical education curriculum aligned with state and district standards.
  • Promote physical fitness, teamwork, sportsmanship, and healthy lifestyle habits through structured activities.
  • Plan and lead engaging lessons that include a variety of sports, fitness routines, and movement-based activities.
  • Maintain a safe, inclusive, and well-organized physical education environment by ensuring proper use of equipment and facilities addressing any safety concerns related to space or materials.
  • Deliver comprehensive health education covering topics such as nutrition, mental health, substance abuse prevention, human development, and personal safety.

  • Demonstrate strong self-efficacy by taking responsibility for student outcomes, advocating for learners, working efficiently, and showing a consistent belief in both personal and student growth.
  • Assess and record students’ progress regularly, providing timely feedback and maintaining accurate academic records. 
  • Collaborate with colleagues, counselors, and administrators to support student success and program development.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student attendance, academic performance, and classroom inventory.
  • Stay current with industry trends, tools, and instructional strategies through ongoing professional development.
  • Engage in school and district initiatives by participating in committees, professional development, community events, and all required student support meetings, including IEP, 504, and Student Study Team meetings.
  • Implement Restorative Practices to build relationships, resolve conflicts, and foster a supportive and respectful classroom and school culture.
  • Design and deliver individualized, engaging lesson plans that promote curiosity and align with students’ learning levels and goals.
  • Measure progress and accomplishments of students towards their academic achievements on a regular basis and provide access to real-time progress reports.
  • Maintain accurate records of accidents, incidents, and other significant events in compliance with licensing requirements and District policies.
  • Communicate openly and respectfully with families, colleagues, and school staff, and maintain accurate records of all interactions.
  • Implement and uphold district, school, and administrative policies with consistency and integrity.
  • Discipline students (according to school/district policy) when necessary and communicate discipline with parents/guardians.
  • Report suspicions of neglect, abuse etc. as required by Board Policy and the State of Michigan.
  • Maintain a growth mindset toward student learning, teaching practice, and personal/collective professional development.
  • Understand and implement Multi-Tier System of Supports (MTSS) in relation to academics, behavior, and social emotional needs. 
  • Collaborate effectively with internal teams and external partners to enhance student achievement and support continuous improvement in teaching and learning.
  • Implement opportunities for students to apply their learning beyond the classroom, fostering global competence and a positive impact on their families, communities, and the wider world.
  • Implement all requirements outlined in students’ IEPs, 504s, Health Plans, and Behavior Intervention Plans with fidelity and attention to individual needs.   
  • Uphold the highest standards of confidentiality in accordance with FERPA regulations, ensuring the privacy and protection of student records and sensitive information. 
  • Employees shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout their employment in the district.
  • Employees shall properly implement Board Policy 3122, Policy 4122, and Policy 2260 on non-discrimination and shall comply with Federal and State laws and regulations, particularly Part 1 104 of Section 504 Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (34 CFR) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee, in alignment with district goals and policies.

ADA Requirements:

Classroom/Office environment; extensive computer work; filing, telephone work; interactive with public, staff members; multi-tasking assignment.
