Position Summary

The Director of Human Resources (HR) is responsible for developing and executing human resource strategy in support of the organization’s mission and strategic objectives. This includes oversight of talent acquisition, employee relations, payroll, benefits administration, compliance, HR systems and processes, and special projects. The Director of HR also leads continuous quality improvement efforts within the HR function and serves as a key advisor to the leadership team. This position directly supervises an HR Specialist and a Payroll and Benefits Specialist.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement HR strategies and initiatives aligned with the organization's goals and values.
  • Provide leadership and oversight for the full employee life cycle, including recruitment, onboarding, performance management, and offboarding.
  • Oversee and ensure accurate, timely, and compliant payroll processing.
  • Manage the administration of employee benefits programs, including health insurance, and leave policies.
  • Serve as a primary contact for benefit vendors and brokers; coordinate annual open enrollment and employee benefit communications.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
  • Investigate and resolve employee relations matters with consistency, fairness, and confidentiality.
  • Maintain and update HR policies, procedures, and the employee handbook.
  • Champion organizational culture across the organization.
  • Supervise, back-up and and support the professional development of the HR Specialist and the Payroll and Benefits Specialist.
  • Oversee HRIS (ADP Workforce Now) administration and ensure the accuracy and confidentiality of employee records.
  • Manage HR-related special projects as assigned by executive leadership, including cross-departmental initiatives.
  • Lead continuous quality improvement within HR systems, workflows, documentation, and service delivery.
  • Monitor HR trends and legal developments to proactively guide internal practices.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field. HR certification (e.g., SHRM-PHR, SCP, SPHR) preferred.
  • Minimum of 7–10 years of progressively responsible HR experience, including payroll and benefits administration.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of employment law, regulatory compliance, and HR best practices.
  • Experience supervising HR staff and managing cross-functional projects.
  • Proficiency with HRIS and payroll systems (ADP or ADP Workforce Now strongly preferred).
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • High level of discretion and sound judgment in handling sensitive information.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in nonprofit and/or geographically dispersed organizations preferred..
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed HR practices.
