Norwich Free Academy (NFA) is accepting applications for the position of Shuttle Bus Driver. This role is responsible for safely transporting NFA students and staff between designated locations. Assignments include daily shuttle service between NFA and Sachem, transportation for Special Education (SPED) trips, Career Pathways programs, and athletic practices or games. The Shuttle Bus Driver supports the Academy’s operational efficiency and ensures a positive, safe transportation experience for all passengers. This is a full-time (10-month school year) position during regular school hours.
Performance Responsibilities:
- Safely transport students and staff between designated sites, including daily NFA–Sachem shuttle service, SPED trips, Career Pathways programs, and athletic activities.
- Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure vehicle safety and compliance with DOT regulations.
- Maintain accurate mileage, fuel, and passenger logs as required.
- Enforce NFA and state safety policies, including proper seating, seatbelt use (where applicable), and passenger conduct.
- Communicate promptly with supervisors regarding route changes, delays, or incidents.
- Provide courteous, professional assistance to students and staff, including those with special transportation needs.
- Adhere to established schedules and ensure timely arrivals/departures for all trips.
- Ensure that mechanical concerns or maintenance needs are attended to promptly.
- Participate in required safety meetings, professional development sessions, and training as directed.
- Perform other duties as assigned by an Administrator or NFA designee.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Demonstrates strong safety awareness and defensive driving skills.
- Maintains professionalism and patience when transporting students, including those with special needs.
- Possesses clear communication skills to interact effectively with students, staff, and supervisors.
- Shows dependability, punctuality, and the ability to manage unexpected scheduling changes.
- Maintains confidentiality and compliance with NFA policies and all state/federal transportation regulations.
Additional Working Conditions:
- Frequent sitting for extended periods while operating the vehicle; occasional standing and walking.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs occasionally (e.g., equipment, student belongings).
- Exposure to varying weather conditions during passenger pick-up and drop-off.
- Flexibility for early morning, evening, or weekend schedules as required by Academy programs and events.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Valid CDL Class B with Airbreak Endorsement.
- Clean driving record and compliance with DOT regulations, including drug and alcohol testing.
- Minimum of one year of professional driving experience, preferably transporting school-aged children.
- CPR/First Aid certification preferred.
- Familiarity with Norwich and surrounding areas is desirable.
