About the Department
Position Duties
- Processes and updates property tax payments received by mail and walk-in
- Researches and resolves routine property tax and refund issues
- Sorts, counts and logs daily mail
- Prepares refund memos regarding overpayments of property taxes
- Assists taxpayer in the completion of property tax payment arrangements and updates account information
- Issues tax certificates to appropriate individuals
- Calculates taxes, refunds, penalties and interest and costs
- Maintains files such as tax payment arrangements, mortgage documents and refund checks
- Performs related duties as required
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from High School or General Education Development (GED) certificate; and one (1) year office experience in a cash collections environment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge of basic office procedures
- Property Tax-Customer Service: Acts as liaison between Tax Office and outside delinquent Tax Attorney pertaining to status of payment arrangements. Transfers tax payment arrangements to diskette
- Mortgages: Prepares form letter correspondence to return previously paid tax payments. Does not resolve mortgage issues received by walk-in
- Refunds: Processes automated refunds bundles. Researches if owner of property different from that listed with Bexar Appraisal District. Places stop payment rotations on various accounts. Makes adjustments manually to check register. Prepares form letter correspondence to submit with refund checks. Does not resolve refund issues received by walk-in. Does not sort, count or log mail
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations; ability to communicate with diverse groups of individuals utilizing tact and diplomacy; ability to operate a personal computer, 10-key adding machine, typewriter and basic office equipment; ability to accurately enter data; ability to deal with hostile or irrational people; ability to understand and follow verbal instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other County employees and the general public
- Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance
- Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
- Must be able to maintain an effective attendance record/pattern
- May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek
- Working conditions are inside an office environment
- Physical requirements include lifting/carrying 10-20 lbs. occasionally
- Occasionally; visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate computer keyboard, 10-key adding machine, and basic office equipment. Frequently communicates with others; must be able to exchange accurate information
- Positions self to perform essential functions
- Subject to sitting, standing, walking, twisting, reaching, pushing, pulling and bending to perform the essential functions
