About the Department
Position Duties
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
- Commands and coordinates the activities of a 24-hour fire suppression shift during all emergency and non-emergency activities including the utilization and practical application of department resources to ensure proper emergency coverage is maintained with safe and effective mitigation accomplished at all times;
- Directs supervising and evaluating Company Officers and reviewing evaluations for other subordinate shift personnel as assigned;
- Administers discipline, making daily staffing assignments for all stations and apparatus;
- Rotates personnel as needed;
- Demonstrates support for the decisions and direction established by supervising Chief Officers and successfully implementing recommendations when directed;
- Coordinates with Chief Officers and/or Human Resources to resolve performance issues of assigned staff;
- Provides input and coordinating with Fire Administration to establish organizational direction for assigned programs;
- Provides and facilitates effective communication between Fire Administration and twenty-four shift personnel;
- Responds to emergencies, and assuming the command-and-control functions of the Incident Command System, directing and supervising personnel and apparatus as required;
- Assists in the preparation and administration of the departmental budget, including compiling data, developing recommendations, compiling purchasing information for bids, and forecasting additional funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials and supplies;
- Assists in assigned administrative duties as a Battalion Chief working a 40-hour schedule; and
- Performs other assigned duties.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this classification. An example would be:
EDUCATION: An Associate of Science (A.S.) degree or an Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree in Fire Science, Fire Administration, Public Administration or a related field; AND
EXPERIENCE: Nine (9) years of increasingly responsible, full-time work experience in fire suppression, prevention and emergency medical response, including three (3) years of experience as a Company Officer with a professional fire department.

- S-290 Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior
- S-219 Firing Operations OR S-234 Ignition Operations
- S-270 Basic Air Operations
- S-404 Safety Officer OR All-Hazards Safety Officer (G/E/L-954)
- Annual RT-130 Certification (current)
*Completion of CSFM Chief Fire Officer Courses is highly desirable.
*Center for Professional Safety Excellence (Fire Officer Designation) is highly desirable.
*National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer is highly desirable.

Other Qualifications
May be required to cover absences of Fire Battalion Chief on other shifts due to vacations, sick leave, and other types of leaves or absences.
Possession of a valid advanced first aid card, along with CPR and EMT certificates are required at time of appointment and must be maintained for the duration of employment.
City of Santee employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
