About Voyant
Voyant Photonics, based in the heart of New York City, is transforming machine perception with a new class of LiDAR devices that are compact enough to fit in the palm of your hand and powerful enough to measure range, velocity, and reflectivity with unparalleled accuracy. By leveraging cutting-edge silicon photonic chips smaller than your fingertip, we deliver sensors that are not only revolutionary in performance but also affordable enough to integrate into any system.
Our technology disrupts the status quo of bulky, expensive, and power-hungry LiDAR systems, making high-precision sensing accessible for widespread adoption in robotics, autonomous vehicles, drones, industrial automation, and beyond.
Why Join us?
At Voyant, you’ll be part of a team turning cutting-edge research into real-world products. As a growing startup, we offer interns the chance to make a meaningful impact, work closely with senior engineers, and learn what it takes to build disruptive sensing technology. This is more than an internship — it’s a chance to grow your technical skills and career in one of the most exciting fields of hardware innovation.
You will learn:
Hands-on experience with FMCW LiDAR technology and silicon photonics.
Best practices in sensor calibration, validation, and characterization.
How startups execute quickly and bring advanced hardware from lab to product.
Cross-disciplinary collaboration with engineers in optics, firmware, and systems integration.
Exposure to advanced tools in signal processing, photonics testing, and data science.
Position Overview
We are seeking a motivated and hands-on Intern to join our team and contribute directly to the characterization and improvement of our FMCW LiDAR systems. This is a unique opportunity to gain real-world experience in a fast-growing startup, working with disruptive sensing technology at the cutting edge of photonics, hardware, and software integration.
As an intern, you will primarily be responsible for data collection and analysis to characterize our sensors, but your role will expand to include calibration, experimental setup, and broader contributions to engineering validation. You’ll work closely with engineers across disciplines (optics, electronics, firmware, and software) and gain insight into how breakthrough hardware is developed and productized.
Location: NYC
Duration: 4 months
Hours: 12+ hours per week
Responsibilities:
Collect and analyze data from FMCW LiDAR experiments to characterize system performance (range, velocity, reflectivity, SNR, etc.).
Perform calibration of sensors, ensuring repeatability and accuracy across test campaigns.
Assist in designing and executing test setups for laboratory and field measurements.
Support automation of data collection pipelines, including scripting and data processing.
Document test procedures, results, and insights to feed back into product improvements.
Contribute to debugging sensor issues by collaborating with hardware and software teams.
Perform literature and competitive research to benchmark performance against industry standards.
Present findings in team reviews and recommend improvements to measurement methods or sensor design.
Qualifications
Pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Computer Engineering, Optics, or a related field.
Strong analytical skills with experience in Python, MATLAB, or similar tools for data analysis.
Hands-on lab experience with instrumentation (oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, photodetectors, etc.) preferred.
Familiarity with signal processing, sensing systems, or optics a plus.
Eagerness to learn, experiment, and contribute in a fast-paced startup environment.
What We Offer
