About the Role:
As a Laboratory Specialist, you will be part of an NCDEQ-certified wastewater laboratory, performing sampling and analyses of wastewater treatment processes, surface waters, and industrial discharges using EPA-approved methods. This role requires attention to detail, strong recordkeeping, and the ability to work independently while supporting plant operations and customer service needs. The job is NON-EXEMPT under FLSA.
Your key responsibilities will include:
Performing daily sample analyses, microbiological reporting, and QA/QC recordkeeping to ensure permit compliance
Collecting on-site industrial samples and coordinating testing with operations staff
Maintaining, calibrating, and operating laboratory instruments
Preparing chemical reagents and managing lab supply inventory
Handling data management, regulatory documentation, and information requests
Supporting and training new personnel while assisting operations staff with lab-related needs
Ensuring a safe, clean, and organized work environment, including some rotating weekend work
This position is physically active and requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, and stand/walk for extended periods of time. Applicants with extensive wastewater laboratory experience may be considered for a higher starting salary.

Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree
- "OR" equivalency of an Associate's Degree with 6+ years of wastewater, laboratory, or related Science field
- Valid Driver's License
- 4+ years of related wastewater processes and/or laboratory experience
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite
- Must obtain one of the following within 18 months of hire date:
- NC C surface water operator certification/ Grade I Wastewater Laboratory Analyst certification,
- NC bacteriological certification
An Ideal Candidate Would Also Possess (Preferred Qualifications):
- Bachelor's Degree or higher in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, or other related Science field
- Wastewater Laboratory Analyst Certification and/or Pretreatment Certification (from any certifying state or entity)
- Previous work experience with the public
- Previous experience working with the State and Federal regulatory agencies
