Parks and Recreation has an opportunity for a qualified Part Time Recreation Specialist. Responsibilities include supervising a wide variety of specialized recreation programs and activities. Does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a Senior Recreation Specialist, Supervisor or Coordinator.

Weekly hours vary depending on program area assigned to. Hours also vary throughout the year depending on month and season.

May supervise part-time, seasonal, contractual work program and/or volunteer staff.

Position Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to the citizens may be assigned.

  • Develops, implements, and evaluates a wide variety of classes/programs/special events serving all ages;
  • Develops, leads and supervises smart living, health/fitness classes/opportunities and active games/sports. Leads and instructs group activities;
  • Creates, establishes and manages a variety of partnerships with local companies, agencies, clubs, churches, public schools, athletic organizations, and colleges/universities. Coordinates special events and services with partner organizations;
  • Develops and encourages positive relationships with neighborhoods, other organizations and the larger community;
  • Works with other program areas to deliver recreation programs in a center setting;
  • Coordinates, recruits, supervises and evaluates instructors, coaches, etc. for a wide range of classes and activities;
  • Coordinates/teaches a variety of classes/activities for of all ages and interests;
  • Coordinates and assists with setup and clean up before and after classes/activities;
  • Conducts organizational meetings and registrations;
  • Enforces policies and program rules;
  • Calculates participant fees, registers participants, collects fees and program donations;
  • Operates specialized computer registration software packages such as ReCPro;
  • Inspects facilities/fields for safety and reports problems or repairs as needed;
  • Supervises participant safety and discipline; Resolves conflicts;
  • Addresses customer concerns and assists with the day to day program operation;
  • Records attendance and compiles reports;
  • Conducts monetary transactions (collects fees, makes deposits, makes purchases, etc.) completing forms and reports adhering to all city policies and procedures;
  • Assists with marketing efforts by writing articles, designing flyers/brochures, compiling calendars/newsletter information, distributing information to community, speaking to community groups, and appearing on television/radio shows;
  • Inventories supplies/equipment and maintains proper storage;
  • Performs custodial tasks as needed such as wiping off tables, cleaning kitchen appliances/equipment, wiping up spills, sweeping and picking up trash etc;
  • Provides support services for other department programs and services;
  • Serves in the absence of supervisor.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES 
Directly supervises volunteers, part-time, work program and seasonal employees planning, assigning, and directing work. Carries out responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Employee will assist in training new employees and will address complaints and resolve problems as appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of two years of course work from an accredited college or university preferred. Considerable experience in a recreation setting, developing, implementing and supervising programs.

Other Qualifications

  • Valid Virginia driver's license and acceptable driving record according to City criteria.
  • Must acquire CPR and General First Aid certifications within the first six months and maintain. Must have flexible schedule and be available to work evenings and weekends.
  • Must successfully complete IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training within 90 days of employment.  May also be required to complete higher levels of NIMS training as determined appropriate for the position.
