About the Department

The City of Pico Rivera is seeking a dedicated Information Technology Help Desk Intern to join our Information Technology team. This part-time internship position is designed to provide hands-on experience in IT support, ensuring timely and effective resolution of technical issues. The intern will play a crucial role in maintaining the efficiency of our IT help desk operations, contributing to the overall productivity of the organization.

The Department 

The Administration Department is comprised of six principal operating divisions: City Council, City Attorney, City Manager, City Clerk, Information Technology and Pico Rivera Innovative Municipal Energy (PRIME). The Administration Department handles a wide range of administrative functions providing overall administration, oversight, coordination, and direction to City departments, striving to provide responsive and consistent customer service to the community and its employees.  It ensures that all departments are applying policy consistently and moving forward in the direction of City Council's priorities and goals.  Additionally, the Office of the City Manager provides each City Department supervision and service-level objectives as directed by the City Council.

City Hall is open Monday through Thursday, 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM.  This position may be scheduled to work up to 28 hours per week.  Some evening or weekend hours may be required.

Position Duties

As an Information Technology Intern, you may assist with the following:


IT Front Desk Support:
  • Handle and collect tickets via phone, web app, mobile app, and in person.

  • Provide basic support over the phone or via email, addressing user queries promptly.

Ticket Management:

  • Assist in triaging incoming tickets, categorizing them based on priority.

  • Ensure proper follow-up and set appropriate expectations for resolution.

Basic Troubleshooting:

  • Address common IT issues such as software installation, password resets, and printer connectivity.

Inventory Documentation:

  • Maintain accurate inventory records and document procedures.

  • Create and update internal knowledge base articles and step-by-step guides for common IT issues.

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Assist with organizing network cables and equipment in server rooms or offices.

  • Help monitor network traffic and identify issues under supervision.

  • Assist in setting up or configuring Wi-Fi access points for new or relocated employees.

  • Support new employees with account setup, device configuration, and access to necessary software.

  • Provide basic user training on software applications and IT tools.

  • Create simple user guides for internal software tools and systems.

Minimum Qualifications

Eligibility/Enrollment Requirements: 

Applicant must be enrolled in a part-time or full-time degree-seeking program at an accredited college or university at the time of application and throughout the duration of employment. 

Must be at least 18 years old.


GPA Requirement:
Must have and maintain a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:


  • Strong written and verbal communication
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills

Other Qualifications

  • Must possess a valid Class C California Driver's License and a safe driving record throughout the course of employment.  City employees are registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles, Employee Pull Notice Program.
  • Proof of car insurance (to be eligible for mileage reimbursement).

 

TESTING:   Candidates who pass all qualifying phases (minimum qualification review, written and/or oral examination) will advance to the hiring department who will have access to a pool of candidates to initiate the selection process.
