About the Department
Under direct supervision, is responsible for typing and transcribing autopsy protocols, manuscripts and correspondence; prepares basic reports; maintains computerized files; and performs related duties as required.
Position Duties
- Transcribes complex forensic data from Dictaphone tapes generated during autopsies by Medical Examiners
- Prepares various forensic documents including autopsy protocols, manuscripts and correspondence utilizing a personal computer and/or typewriter
- Types moderately complex letters/memos and prepares court documents for Medical Examiners
- Develops and maintains files
- Performs quality assurance on completed cases and legal documents
- Scans completed cases into electronic KOVIS system
- Maintains statistics and develops reports
- Answers telephone, routes calls and takes messages utilizing some discretion
- Maintains schedules including routine appointments and court appearances
- Responds to general questions and complaints regarding department or work
- Aids in answering questions from bereaved family members
- May assume the duties of the office assistants in a relief capacity
- Performs other duties as required
Minimum Qualifications
- High School or a General Education Development (GED) certificate; and two (2) years office experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Good knowledge of English, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and attention to detail; knowledge of Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Ability to transcribe; ability to accurately enter data and file information; ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other County employees and the general public
- Skill to type 55 wpm with no more than 7 errors; Requires recent typing test administered by hired date (Typing tests may be administered by Department, Human Resources or Workforce Solutions Alamo Career Centers)
- Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance
- Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
- May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek
- Constantly working in indoor conditions
- Occasionally moves items weighing up to 10-15 pounds
- Occasionally moves about the office
- Frequently communicates with others; must be able to exchange accurate information
- Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery
- Positions self to perform essential functions
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position
