About the Department

The primary purpose of this position is to serve as lead nutritionist for the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Office at Craven County Community Health Center in Havelock, NC. The employee in this position will provide nutrition assessment and medical nutrition therapy to high-risk pregnant and postpartum women and to high-risk children. 

Position Duties

To participate in the local operation of the Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC).

Assess applicant’s growth records, laboratory data and nutritional status and determine eligibility for the WIC program. Provide nutrition education on infant/child feeding, prenatal nutrition and nutrition during lactation.

Provide nutrition assessment of child’s condition through analysis of growth measures, laboratory data and in-depth interview with caretaker.

Provide nutrition counseling to high-risk children with chronic or acute health problems such as low birth weight, prematurity, failure to thrive, cystic fibrosis, multiple medical problems, tube feedings, congenital disorders, etc.  

Provide assessment and medical nutrition therapy for high-risk women participants with diabetes, gestational diabetes, colitis, eating disorders, multiple sclerosis, and history of low birth weight of premature babies.

Follow the patient’s progress through growth and/or weight gain assessment, biochemical data, consultation with other health care providers, and dietary assessment. Adjust the medical nutrition therapy as indicated.     

Refer participant to other services such as Red Cross, Family Services, etc. as indicated from interview and assessment.

Coordinate outreach/referral systems at MCAS, Cherry Point. Assist the Nutrition Services Director in maintaining WIC caseload. 

Develop and present a monthly breastfeeding class to WIC participants including high risk participants.

Serve as representative of CCHD nutrition program aboard MCAS, Cherry Point.  

Design nutrition education materials for education of routine and high-risk clients.  Evaluate and redesign as necessary.

Collect laboratory data for the evaluation of WIC clients and high-risk clients.

Develop and present nutrition education classes on a variety of topics.

Other duties as assigned by supervisor and/or management.

In the event of a disaster, may be required to assist as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Dietetics Registration; or Master's degree in Dietetics, Public Health Nutrition, or Nutrition; or graduation from a Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education -approved Didactic Program in Dietetics and two years nutrition experience; or Dietetic Technician, Registered with the Commission on Dietetics Registration with a Bachelor's degree in any subject area from an accredited four-year college or university and two years nutrition experience; or a Bachelor's of Science degree in Dietetics, Public Health Nutrition or Community Nutrition from an accredited four-year college or university and two years nutrition experience.  
College transcript is required.

American Dietetic Registration or licensure preferred but not required.
