IDEAL CANDIDATE
Our ideal Permit Technician is a proactive and service-oriented professional who thrives in a collaborative, public-facing environment. They are responsible for providing courteous and knowledgeable customer service at the public counter and by phone, as well as reviewing and processing permit applications and construction plans, and interpreting codes, ordinances, and permitting requirements for a diverse range of stakeholders. With strong attention to detail and proficiency in database and word processing software, they efficiently calculate and collect fees, maintain accurate records, and prepare reports and correspondence. The candidate demonstrates the ability to coordinate with Building Inspectors, other City departments, and external agencies, ensuring that all documentation is complete, compliant, and properly routed. Their commitment to accuracy, professionalism, and teamwork makes them a key contributor to the department’s mission of facilitating safe and compliant development throughout the city.
DISTINGUISHING CHACTERISTICS
The Permit Technician is the journey-level class in the permit technician class series. Incumbents are responsible for providing quality customer service at a public counter, processing construction plans, forms and permit applications for the issuance of development and construction permits for commercial, industrial, and residential projects.
Permit Technician is distinguished from Senior Permit Technician in that an incumbent in the latter class is responsible for providing lead work direction, training and guidance to assigned staff and performing the more complex permit duties.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent; and two years of increasingly responsible office administrative or secretarial experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
The Building and Safety Division ensures compliance with city and state building codes to promote safety and quality construction. The division provides essential services such as permit issuance, plan checks, inspections, and code enforcement to support residents, businesses, and developers.
