Hours of Work: 4/10's. Mon -Thurs. 6:00a.m.- 4:30p.m. On occasion, and depending on business needs, the candidate must also be willing to cover swing shifts.

NOTE: This position is a flex position. Candidates will be hired in at a level I, with a starting salary of $30.42 hourly. After a 6–24-month period, the selected candidate will be evaluated to determine if they meet the criteria to flex to a level II, with a starting salary of $33.56 hourly.

The ideal candidate will have two years of progressively responsible experience in a fast-paced warehousing/distribution environment. They are detail-oriented, safety-conscious, and able to multi-task effectively with the ability to adapt to new technology and work in a fluctuating environment as new processes and procedures are developed. Additionally, the candidate will demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to maintain effective teamwork and collaboration with internal departments, customers, and vendors.

INTRODUCTION: Human Resources will screen applications and supplemental questionnaires. Candidates possessing the strongest skills and experience for this position will be forwarded to the hiring department for further evaluation and to determine who will be invited to the formal interview process. The successful candidate may be required to pass a drug screening, background check and may be required to pass a job-related physical evaluation.

GENERAL PURPOSE

Under general supervision, receives, stores, issues, controls and maintains an adequate inventory of materials, supplies, parts, tools and equipment used in the construction, maintenance and repair of the District's treatment, transmission, storage and distribution systems and facilities; loads and delivers material and supplies; and performs related duties as assigned.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The level and scope of the knowledge and abilities listed below vary according to the I versus II levels distinguished above.

Knowledge of:

Methods, practices, supplies, tools and equipment used in the construction, maintenance and repair of water works systems and facilities; packaging, shipping, receiving, quality assurance inspection, storing, delivery, inventory control and physical inventory practices, procedures, methods and techniques; material and supply identification and classification methods and procedures; warehouse work practices and safety, security, health and sanitation procedures relevant to the storage and distribution of materials, supplies and other items purchased and stored by the District; practices, procedures and legal requirements for handling hazardous materials purchased and stored by the District; practices, procedures, methods and techniques to appropriately dispose of excess items owned by the District; basic math; proper lifting techniques; basic research and data analysis techniques; safety practices and procedures pertaining to the work; use of computers and specialized software applicable to the work.

Ability to:

Implement inventory control procedures; properly and safely operate warehouse equipment, such as forklifts, pallet jacks and hand trucks; accurately inspect incoming shipments and compare to purchase orders; apply knowledge of District construction, maintenance and repair activities to determining required materials, parts and supplies and anticipating needs of field crews; complete and maintain data, records and forms; take physical inventory accurately and efficiently; understand and follow written and oral rules, regulations, policies, procedures and instructions; gather and evaluate data and make logical recommendations based on comparative analyses; operate a computer and other standard office equipment; follow safe work practices and procedures, including storage and disposal of hazardous materials; prepare clear and concise records, reports and other written materials; exercise independent judgment and initiative within established guidelines; establish and maintain effective relationships with District management, staff, vendors, contractors and others encountered in the course of work.

Training and Experience:

A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent and:

Material Handler I – Two years of progressively responsible warehousing, storekeeping, inventory control or closely related experience in a large complex warehouse environment.

Material Handler II – A Material Handler I may be considered for advancement to Material Handler II after demonstrating proficiency to perform the full range of duties of the latter class.  Proficiency criteria and the process for demonstrating performance at the levels established in the criteria are established jointly by hiring authorities and the Director, Human Resources and are described in a separate document.

Typically, a Material Handler I is expected to be capable of meeting the proficiency criteria within a 12–24 month period, depending on an individual's prior experience and progression in performing the full range of Material Handler II duties as described in the established performance criteria.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:

A valid Nevada driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District's Vehicle Insurance Policy.

A Forklift Operation Certificate or the ability to obtain one within six months from date of hire.

A Current Hazmat Shipping Certification or the ability to obtain one within six months from date of hire.

The employee is frequently required to climb or balance; and bend, stoop, kneel or squat.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Mental Demands

While performing the duties of this class, employees are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret complicate data, information and documents; analyze and solve issue and delivery problems; use math and mathematical reasoning; observe and interpret situations; learn and apply new information or new skills; perform highly detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks; work under intensive deadlines with constant interruptions; and interact with District management, staff, vendors, contractors and others encountered in the course of work.
