Proper Voltage is the universal integration layer between advanced batteries and real products. We remove the complexity of voltage mismatch, chemistry limitations, and integration delays that have historically locked product teams into suboptimal power solutions.
Our Battery Operating System (bOS) makes advanced chemistries like sodium-ion, LTO, and lithium-sulfur plug-and-play with existing products, no redesign required. This means better safety, performance, and efficiency with zero product compromises.
Instead of a BMS or chemistry startup, we're the system that bridges the gap between breakthrough power technologies and the products that need them most.
Power should be a design advantage, not a limitation. Join us in making advanced batteries universally accessible.
Job Overview:
As a Lead Systems Engineer at Proper Voltage with a focus on high-voltage battery systems, you will serve as the critical link between customers and our electrical, mechanical, and software engineering teams. You will help ensure seamless integration of advanced / emerging battery technologies into customer products and our internal platforms. You will lead the system-level definition, requirements development, documentation, testing, and customer integration efforts. You will guide adoption of and ensure compliance with relevant safety requirements and other industry standards and product certifications. This role requires an experienced engineer capable of understanding complex multidisciplinary interactions and translating high-level concepts into detailed engineering solutions with accompanying documentation.
Responsibilities
Analyze and clarify customer requirements, translating them into clear, actionable design and development objectives.
Lead system-level engineering activities for high-voltage battery systems, including architecture definition, requirements management, interface documentation, product certification, and integration planning.
Lead discussions and coordinate solutions to complex engineering challenges across multiple product lines and projects.
Identify opportunities to leverage engineering efforts and product features across projects to optimize the overall development of the company’s technology portfolio.
Collaborate cross-functionally with electrical, firmware, mechanical, and customer-facing teams to define system specifications and ensure effective communication and execution.
Identify, mitigate, and communicate technical risks, ensuring robust integration and operational readiness.
Develop comprehensive documentation, including system specifications, interface control documents, and test plans, maintaining traceability throughout the project lifecycle.
When needed, assist with schematic development, board layout, component selection, thermal design, hardware bring-up, system testing, and other design activities.
Support system integration, testing, and validation, ensuring the solutions meet customer and internal performance objectives.
Provide technical guidance to junior engineers, fostering a collaborative and innovative team culture.
Required Qualifications
5 or more years of industry experience (or 3 or more with M.S. or Ph.D.) in high-voltage battery system and power electronics design.
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical, Electronics, Systems Engineering, or related fields), graduate degree preferred.
6+ years of relevant systems engineering experience, including direct responsibility for multidisciplinary integration and system-level requirements management.
Demonstrated experience developing and managing complex high-voltage battery and power distribution product architectures, integration plans, and requirement documentation.
Experience developing and executing test plans for system validation and verification.
Exceptional communication skills with the ability to clearly convey technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Proven experience in project leadership or technical project management.
Working knowledge of safety and product certification requirements for high-voltage battery systems.
Comfortable operating in fast-paced, agile environments.
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, able to quickly grasp complex technical concepts and lead engineering decisions.
Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks and priorities concurrently.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working closely with customers in a technical capacity, ideally involving custom integrations or tailored engineering solutions.
Experience in startups or high-growth technology companies, demonstrating adaptability and versatility across engineering disciplines.
Familiarity with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools and methodologies.
Prior experience with:
Lithium ion, sodium ion, and other advanced energy storage technologies.
DC-to-DC converters and digital controls in power electronics.
High-voltage battery backup systems and pulsed power systems.
Analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuit design, simulation, and layout.
Thermal management for high-power battery systems.
Compensation & Benefits
Salary range: $150,000 - $200,000 depending on experience and qualifications.
Equity options as part of the compensation package.
Generous paid time off and paid holidays (PTO) policy.
Join us in reimagining the relationship between power and products, and help build a more sustainable, efficient future where any product can access the best battery technology available.
