JOB SUMMARY

As a teacher in the Mashpee Public Schools you will be expected to provide rigorous instruction to the diverse population of students in your classroom; align your teaching to the district and state standards; regularly assess students for learning comprehension and modify your teaching to ensure that students are learning; to provide a classroom that is conducive to the learnings needs of all students, especially students who are learning English and students with disabilities.  

We are seeking a dedicated and qualified English Learner (EL) Teacher to join our educational team. The successful candidate will provide specialized instruction to English Learners, collaborate with classroom teachers, and support students in developing English language proficiency across all domains: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES (include but are not limited to):

 

  • Plan a program of study to meet students’ academic, social, and emotional developmental needs.
  • Promote high standards and expectations for student achievement.
  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students. 
  • Promote and appreciate diversity to ensure equitable opportunities for student learning, including implementing specific strategies for students with special needs, 504 plans, and/or second language learners. 
  • Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals; establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate objectives to students. 
  • Utilize innovative approaches and instructional strategies, including the effective use of technologies, to increase student learning and confidence to learn. 
  • Counsel with colleagues, students, and/or parents on a regular basis. 
  • Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provide progress reports as required. 
  • Assist the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct, and for the classroom to develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintain order in the classroom. 
  • Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for teacher aids and/or volunteers. 
  • Attend staff meetings and serve on staff and school committees. Maintains professional competence through participation in professional growth activities. 

POSITION SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Direct Instruction
    • Provide targeted English language development instruction to English Learners through push-in, pull-out, or co-teaching models as determined by student needs
    • Develop and implement lesson plans aligned with WIDA standards and the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks
    • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs of English Learners across proficiency levels
  • Assessment & Progress Monitoring
    • Administer and interpret language proficiency assessments, including ACCESS for ELLs
    • Monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly
    • Maintain accurate records of student performance and growth
  • Collaboration & Consultation
    • Work collaboratively with classroom teachers to implement effective SEI strategies
    • Consult with teachers on appropriate accommodations and modifications for EL students
    • Participate in grade-level, departmental, and school-wide planning meetings
    • Serve as a member of the student support team when appropriate for EL students
  • Program Compliance
    • Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations regarding EL education
    • Assist with the identification and placement of EL students
    • Help develop and monitor Language Acquisition Plans as required
    • Support the implementation of the LOOK Act requirements
  • Family & Community Engagement
    • Communicate regularly with families of English Learners regarding student progress
    • Facilitate access to translation/interpretation services when needed
    • Serve as a cultural liaison between families and the school
    • Participate in family engagement activities

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

    • Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution
    • DESE Certification in the content area English as a Second Language (ESL)/English Language Learners (ELL) at the appropriate grade level
    • SEI Endorsement
    • Knowledge of WIDA standards and ACCESS assessment
    • Understanding of the Massachusetts English Language Development (ELD) frameworks
    • Experience working with culturally and linguistically diverse students and families
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Demonstrated experience with elementary learning principles
    • Citizenship, residency, or work visa required
    • Cori and fingerprint clearance are required
