The Marketing and Communications team at the Oregon State University Foundation connects alumni and friends to OSU through storytelling, experiences and community-building that inspire engagement and philanthropic support. As part of a creative, high-performing team, the writer will contribute to a wide range of strategic projects – including digital content, print materials, email campaigns and the alumni magazine – ensuring that OSU’s supporters feel valued and informed. This role collaborates closely with partners across the broader Marketing and Donor Engagement division, including Annual Giving, Stewardship and Legislative Advocacy. 
  
Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Writer develops compelling digital and print content for the OSU Foundation & Alumni Association. This role focuses on storytelling that highlights the impact of philanthropy and volunteerism, producing copy for platforms such as the alumni magazine, web features, stewardship reports and donor thank-you letters.  
  

Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Write, edit and proofread external communications such as endowment reports, impact reports, giving society communications, donor and student profiles and more. 
  • Create compelling and timely content for use by executives and development and alumni relations officers to increase engagement of donors, alumni and friends. In this capacity, the writer will keep university “brag points” fresh, repackage news releases, develop brief stories of student and faculty successes and otherwise curate content for colleagues to use in their outreach to alumni and friends. 
  • Create joy-sparking thank-you letters, action-inspiring follow-up notes and other correspondence to alumni, donors and friends of the university. 
  • Create short-form stories and other content that help create compelling impact and endowment reports, as well as other communications. 
  • Accurately proofread and edit communications from Foundation and university partners, such as letters, proposals and other communications. 
  • Interview donors, students and other key constituents for stories.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.   

Knowledge/Skills:
  • Grammar and AP style  
  • Outstanding writing, editing, storytelling, fact-checking and proofreading skills as evidenced by a strong portfolio of professional writing that is clear, accurate and inspiring  
  • Excellent online research skills  
  • Exceptional web writing skills including writing for search engine optimization and social media  
  • Strong interviewing, networking and project management skills  
  • Write in a voice appropriate to varied audiences while maintaining authenticity and personalization  
  • Use AI tools and emerging technologies to enhance storytelling, content creation and communications strategy  
  • Translate complex academic information into clear, jargon-free language that conveys a compelling case for support and/or impact  
  • Handle multiple projects simultaneously and produce polished, concise content under tight deadlines  
  • Work independently, make informed decisions and work collaboratively with others on a team  
  • Use a complex database to find information important to communications projects  
  • Apply feedback to current and future communications, creating templates as needed  
  • Handle interpersonal relationships maturely, thoughtfully and empathetically, including the ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds  

Measures of Success:
  • The ability to deliver inspiring ready-to-use content that is appropriate in voice and tone and does not require heavy editing or rewriting  
  • The ability to independently manage workload and deliver communications that are on time, free of errors and compliant with AP and local style   
  • The engagement of target audiences through personalized communications and correspondence and measured both by anecdotal feedback and formal surveys 

Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree and two years of professional-level experience as a writer or editor and excellent professional writing samples. Relevant experience equivalencies will be considered.

Pay Rate: $60,000 per year

Work Location
The work location for this position is the OSU Foundation’s Corvallis, Oregon office. 
The Foundation offers a program called Core Work Days, a hybrid approach combining remote and in office work days. Unless traveling for work, Foundation employees are in office on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and work remotely, if preferred, on Monday and Friday.
