About the Department

POSITION INFORMATION:

This is a Promotional / Open Competitive recruitment to create an eligibility list for current and future vacancies.  Successful candidates are expected to work eight (8) hours a day, five (5) days a week, and twelve (12) months per school year. Candidates must submit proof of all required documents to be considered for the recruitment process. 

GENERAL PURPOSE

Under general supervision, performs a variety of journey-level plastering duties in the construction, maintenance, alteration and repair of interior and exterior surfaces of District buildings, structures and facilities; and performs related duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is a full journey-level class responsible for performing a wide variety of skilled duties in the alteration, construction, modification and repair of interior and exterior surfaces of District buildings, structures, and related facilities. Assignments vary, encompass a variety of tasks, seldom require detailed instructions, and require sound judgment and initiative.

Position Duties

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.

  1. Repairs, finishes, constructs and alters various types of walls in buildings and structures.
     
  2. Installs drywall, laths, paper, wire or other materials to support plaster; hangs sheetrock, tapes seams and applies drywall to cover taped areas.
     
  3. Prepares both interior and exterior surfaces for plaster; patches and repairs holes in walls and ceilings; performs inside or outside stucco work; matches finishes has required.
     
  4. Mixes and applies plaster including base, brown and finish coats as required.
     
  5. Applies acoustic texture to ceilings and other surfaces.
     
  6. Operates a variety of equipment and machines, including plaster and cement mixers, acoustic sprayer, levels, saws and other hand and power tools.
     
  7. Builds, erects, moves and works from scaffolds and ladders as necessary.
     
  8. Performs various carpentry, painting, or other maintenance duties related to plastering assignments to facilitate work.

Other Duties:

  1. Lays concrete blocks or bricks; mixes, pours and finishes concrete to build ramps, slabs, retaining walls and sidewalks.
     
  2. Installs and repairs playground equipment.
     
  3. Patches and repairs asphalt areas.
     
  4. Assists other trades personnel as assigned.
     
  5. Schedules and coordinates activities with other personnel and school site administrators.
     
  6. Requisitions necessary tools, equipment and supplies.
     
  7. Ensures the timely and accurate completion of preventive maintenance activities.
     
  8. Trains and directs the work of others as assigned.
     
  9. Maintains records related to work performed.
     
  10. Operates light- and medium-duty equipment.
     
  11. Makes oral and written reports on work performed.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  1. Methods, equipment and materials used in plaster and cement work.
     
  2. Proper methods and techniques used in cutting, installing and taping drywall.
     
  3. Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies.
     
  4. Health and safety regulations.
     
  5. Basic record keeping techniques.

Ability to:

  1. Perform skilled plaster and cement work.
     
  2. Cut, tape and install drywall.
     
  3. Build or erect, move and work on scaffolds and ladders.
     
  4. Operate a variety of equipment and machines including plaster and cement mixers, acoustic sprayer, saws and other hand and power tools.
     
  5. Perform other skilled maintenance duties.
     
  6. Maintain routine records.
     
  7. Understand and follow oral and written directions.
     
  8. Lift heavy objects.
     
  9. Perform heavy physical labor.
     
  10. Work cooperatively with others.

Education, Training, and Experience: 

  • High School diploma, G.E.D. equivalent, or higher education
  • And, one year of journey-level experience in the plastering trade. 

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements

  • A valid California Driver License.
  • Proof of insurability.

  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate plastering equipment.
  • Seeing to inspect systems and read a variety of materials.
  • Bending at the waist, stooping, kneeling, crawling, or crouching.
  • Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.
  • Climbing ladders and working from heights.
  • Lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling heavy objects up to 50 pounds.
  • With assistance, occasionally Lift, carry, push and pull heavy objects over 100 pounds.
  • Standing for extended periods of time.
  • Heavy physical labor.
  • Exposure to chemical fumes, toxic gases and other poisonous substances.
  • Working in a cramped or restrictive work chamber.
  • Working around and with machinery having moving parts.
