About the Department

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Responsible for assisting the Programs Director in the functioning and coordination of various inmate programs within the Corrections Division of the Sheriff’s Office.

 

Position Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:   Essential functions are fundamental job duties.  They do not include marginal tasks which are also performed but are incidental to the primary functions.  The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position, nor does every position allocated to the class necessarily perform every duty listed.   Personal characteristics required of all employees such as honesty, industry, sobriety and the ability to get along with others, are presumed qualities and may not be listed specifically. 

  • Assist in developing, monitoring and updating various inmate programs within the Correctional Facility. 
  • In the absence of the Programs Coordinator, maintain liaison with community support groups and related organizations for inmate referrals as needed; including religious, counseling and other programs as required.
  • Assists in sorting and distributing inmate requests and grievances to appropriate staff for resolution.
  • Directs in the operations of inmate community outreach programs to include vocational, educational, and inmate work programs.
  • Develops, plans, and implements, both in person and virtual programs, designed to reduce inmate recidivism and includes religious, parenting, addiction, anger management, educational, and vocational programs.
  • Assist in identifying eligible inmates who would benefit from attending and completing available programs.
  • Assists in maintaining the inmate law library computer resources.
  • Assists in communicating with attorneys and scheduling meetings with inmates.
  • Assists in overseeing and ensuring proper operation of the inmate mail program to include letters, packages, postage distribution.
  • Maintains required ledgers, logs, writes reports and performs inventories as required.
  • Conduct and maintain an inventory of all items in the Programs Unit.
  • Conducts other bookkeeping functions such as maintaining files and preparation of daily reports.
  • Enters data by use of keyboards.
  • Performs other related duties as needed or required.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS:  Use speech, vision, hearing to communicate.  Be able to walk bend stoop, and lift light to moderate weights, have manual dexterity required to operate a wide variety of office equipment.  

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Inside an office environment and within a Correctional Facility.   Work around inmates that will subject you to profane/foul language, obscene gestures, dangerous persons, and stressful situations.

KNOWLEDGE OF: Data entry, clerical office procedures, micro-computer operation and various software programs, report writing, bookkeeping and basic research methods.

ABILITY TO:  Maintain various inmate accounts, order/purchase equipment, deal effectively with the public and various representatives of organizations in the absence of the Programs Coordinator.

SKILLS:   Operate office equipment and perform data entry.

 

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:   Graduation from High School or GED.  Four years’ experience with typing and data entry. 

Other Qualifications

LICENSE: Applicant must have a valid Florida Driver’s License at the time of hire and maintain said license while employed in this position. 
 
ADDITIONAL: Must pass a thorough background check including CVSA, physical exam, and drug screen if a new hire. May require occasional shift work.
