SUMMARY OF FUNCTION:
This position is responsible for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of all parks, pathways,
sports fields, cemeteries, and related park amenities within the department’s area of responsibility.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Level I
- Operates (at a basic level) the following equipment: chainsaw, front-end loaders, mowers (ride and push), forklift, hand tools, bucket trucks and snow removal equipment;
- Supports the training, supervision and mentoring of department staff during the summer
months to ensure that day-to-day functions are followed and refers unusual problems or
policy matters to the Parks Foreman; - Maintains equipment and hand tools utilized in the performance of day-to-day tasks;
- Interacts and works with the full-time staff and seasonal summer staff performing work in the
areas of the department’s responsibility; - Performs construction and maintenance tasks; operates a power saw and brush cutter at
ground level; falls and bucks trees and performs related park forestry operations; - Assists in flower beds, shrub and tree pruning, outdoor ice rink maintenance, snow removal,
sanding and other related duties; - Ensures that City-owned washrooms are clean and tidy;
- Provides emergency assistance when required;
- Performs general inspections and maintenance of vehicles and equipment and documents
any required maintenance; and - Performs other duties as assigned.
- Completion of a High School Diploma or equivalent;
- No experience necessary;
- Education or experience in horticulture an asset;
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License; with Q Endorsement preferred;
- Clean Driver’s Abstract;
- Standard First Aid;
- Chainsaw Safety and Cutting Techniques Training;
- Flag Person Certificate preferred;
- Fall Protection Certificate preferred;
- Physically able to perform required duties;
- Ability to plan, prioritize and manage own workload including the ability to tolerate frequent
interruptions and still meet deadlines; - Ability to work independently and in a team environment;
- Ability to understand and carry out instructions and perform manual tasks;
- Public relations, interpersonal and verbal communication skills;
- Previous experience in a municipal parks environment, golf course or landscaping would be
an asset; - Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding department and municipal matters; and
- Subject to a criminal record check.
Level II
- Completion of a High School Diploma or equivalent;
- Minimum of six (6) months to one (1) year of experience in parks operations or related field;
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered;
- Education or experience in horticulture an asset;
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence with Q-Endorsement;
- Clean driver’s abstract;
- Fall Protection Certificate;
- Flag Person Certificate;
- Standard First Aid;
- WHMIS Certification;
- Chainsaw Safety and Cutting Techniques Training;
- CSA Playground Certificate OR Pesticide Applicator Certificate;
- Parks & Sport Fields Operator Level 1 Certificate;
- Ground Disturbance preferred;
- Confined Space preferred;
- Physically able to perform required duties;
- Ability to plan, prioritize and manage own workload, including the ability to tolerate frequent
interruptions and still meet deadlines; - Ability to work independently and in a team environment;
- Ability to understand and carry out instructions and perform manual tasks;
- Willingness to obtain Class 3 Driver’s Licence with Q-Endorsement;
- Public relations, interpersonal and verbal communication skills;
- Previous experience in a horticultural field, including but not limited to a municipal parks
environment, golf course or landscaping, would be an asset; - Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding department and municipal matters; and
- Subject to a criminal record check.
Level III
- Completion of a High School Diploma or equivalent, supplemented by the Journeyman Landscape
Horticulturist designation or enrolled in the Landscape Horticulturist Apprenticeship program; - Minimum of one (1) to three (3) years of experience in parks operations or related field;
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered;
- Education or experience in horticulture an asset;
- Class 5 Driver’s License with Q-Endorsement;
- Clean driver’s abstract;
- Pesticide Applicator Certificate;
- Advanced Chainsaw Safety and Cutting Techniques Training;
- CSA Playground Certificate;
- Fall Protection Certificate;
- Flag Person Certificate;
- Parks & Sport Fields Operator Level 2 Certificate;
- Confined Space;
- Standard First Aid;
- WHMIS Certification;
- Ground Disturbance;
- Irrigation Certification preferred;
- Arboriculture Technician Certificate preferred;
- Proficient in Microsoft Office;
- Ability to plan, prioritize and manage own workload, including the ability to tolerate frequent
interruptions and still meet deadlines; - Ability to lead a crew;
- Physically able to perform required duties;
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment;
- Ability to understand and carry out instructions and perform manual tasks;
- Willingness to obtain Class 3 with Q-Endorsement;
- Public relations, interpersonal and verbal communication skills;
- Previous experience in a municipal parks environment, golf course or landscaping would be an
asset; - Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding department and municipal matters; and
- Subject to a criminal record check.
