Developing Design Flood Elevations and Envisioning Sea Level Rise Adaptation Strategies for a Densely Developed Coastal Community, Waikiki, Hawai‘i for Improved Outcomes for Communities, Economy, and the Stewardship of Marine Resources

Duties and Responsibilities
1.  Drafts and edits academic journal manuscripts including literature reviews, writing, and graphics, with guidance from supervisors. The first subject is design flood elevations and related adaptation strategies.
2.   Creates presentations, surveys, project summaries, conference proposals, award applications, educational materials, and visually-appealing technical reports with guidance from supervisors.
3.   Delivers presentations and surveys.
4.   Edits existing or creates new conceptual design 3D models and renderings of strategies to adapt coastal communities to future sea level rise.
5.   Participates in training, such as American Institute Architects courses.
6.   Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
1.   Full-time Graduate Student at University of Hawai?i  with graduation date May 2026 or later.
2.   Successful candidates will demonstrate:
a.   Strong interest in this topic;
b.   Ability to be self-motivated, responsible, disciplined, honest;
c.   Strong graphic communication skills (e.g., renderings, diagrams, graphs, reports);
d.   Strong public presentation skills;
e.   Clear, concise written communication skills;
f.   Ability to conduct literature reviews and write for academic research (e.g., a research paper with citations);
g.   Effective verbal communication and teamwork.
h.   Ability to create own work plan and milestones to consistently complete tasks on time.
i.   Ability to work independently between meetings, problem-solve, think critically, follow directions, be open to constructive-criticism.

Desirable Qualifications
1.   Students in the MArch or DArch program or with an undergraduate architecture degree with some familiarity with building codes.
2.   Students who have completed courses in graphic communication and research writing and/or methods.
3.   Software knowledge of some or all of the following programs: Adobe InDesign; Adobe Illustrator; Adobe Photoshop; Adobe Acrobat; Microsoft Word; Microsoft Excel; Microsoft Powerpoint; Rhino 3D; Lumion, Enscape, or other rendering program; Menti (survey software).
4.   Students who previously completed Arch 690 “Urban Adaptation to Coastal Flooding”.
5.   Experience working with stakeholders such as community members, building or land owners, and occupant/user groups.
6.   Experience writing peer-reviewed academic journal papers.
7.   Website editing experience in WordPress.
8.   Grade Point Average 3.0 or above.
