We are on a mission to transform the aerospace and defense industry by helping our partners accomplish more in space with less. Opterus combines our patented high-strain composites with origami principles to design and manufacture high-performance rollable booms, RF structures, solar arrays, and other next-generation structures and systems. We’re looking for a motivated team player to join us in shaping the future of space structures!

About the Position:

As a Mechanical Engineer on the Booms and Deployment Systems team, you will play an exciting role in developing lightweight, high-performance deployable structures for spacecraft and lunar surface operations. The ideal candidate will have some experience with designing deployable structures for spacecraft or composite engineering. In this dynamic role, you will have the opportunity to support various stages of the project lifecycle, from early ideation to assembly and flight validation.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the design and analysis of structural components and deployable systems through initial ideation, prototyping, qualification, and production
  • Create CAD assemblies (SolidWorks), build documentation, and other mechanical drawings
  • Provide hands-on support for assembly and integration of hardware in a clean room environment
  • Test and validate structural components and designs for flight readiness
  • Iterate and prototype designs frequently, characterizing performance and documenting results
  • Collaborate with production and analysis teams to meet project goals: adhering to quality standards, budgets, and timelines
  • Exercise the ability to quickly adapt, pivot, and offer creative solutions to unforeseen challenges
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • BS in Mechanical, Aerospace, or related discipline; MS preferred
  • 2+ years of mechanical engineering experience, preferably with spacecraft design, deployable structures, and/or composites
  • Demonstrated creative problem-solving in engineering
  • Understanding of GD&T and standard analysis practices
  • Fluency in CAD, preferably SolidWorks
  • Strong organizational and communication skills (oral, written, and presentation)
  • Team-oriented with the ability to be a self-starter and work independently
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, Teams, etc.)
  • US citizen or permanent resident

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary range of $80,000 - $115,000, based on experience and qualifications
  • Flexible and hybrid work schedules: 9/80 or 10/80 schedules, with two or more days in office
  • Opterus pays 100% of employees’ premiums and 70% of dependents’ premiums
  • Medical, Dental, Vision, Short Term Disability, Long Term Disability, Life and AD&D insurances
  • 401K matching up to 4%

  • Work within a community-oriented environment at Forge Campus. Amenities include an onsite restaurant, brewery, coffee shop, and multiple shared outdoor space
