Position Duties
THE POSITION:
The City of Mission Viejo seeks qualified candidates to serve as our next Planning Technician to perform a variety of technical level duties in the Planning division thereby requiring familiarity with planning procedures and planning and zoning processes; provides information and assistance to developers, the business community, residents, and the public pertaining to the administration of, and compliance with, planning, zoning, land use, permits, and municipal code and ordinance related matters.
This is an entry-level technical class in the planning class series that performs a variety of routine planning duties. This position provides valuable exposure to the full spectrum of municipal planning functions and offers opportunities for professional growth, serving as a potential pathway toward an Assistant Planner position. Incumbents may advance to an Assistant Planner position after gaining the knowledge, skills and experience that meet the qualifications and by demonstrating the ability to perform the work of the higher-level class.
Currently, there is one (1) full-time vacancy primarily scheduled to work Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and may be required to work on evenings, weekends and holidays depending on the needs of the City. This is an FLSA non-exempt position and is entitled to overtime.

YOUR TEAM:
The Community Development Department has a FY 25-26 Department operating budget of $4.1 million and consists of 8 full-time staff, contract Building Services staff, and consultant staff for the City’s CDBG and Housing Rehabilitation programs. Minimum Qualifications
IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:
- Considerable experience conducting complex research projects, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing effective staff reports.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with numerous deadlines and is detail-oriented and accurate in their work.
- Proactive thinker with a positive, solution-oriented attitude.
- A flexible self-starter who is enthusiastic, open to new ideas, and works independently with minimal supervision.
- Successful performance of work which includes long-and-short range planning and environmental review.
- Good oral and written communication skills with knowledge of writing and standard format for reports and correspondence.
- An ability to receive feedback and adjust.
- Experience maintaining effective and harmonious working relationships with all levels of staff, elected officials, community partners, and the public.
Other Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
Equivalent to the completion of at least twenty-four (24) semester units of college-level coursework with an emphasis in Planning; preferably supplemented with a minimum of six (6) months of clerical and/or technical experience, paid or unpaid, in planning or a similar function in local government, real estate development, paralegal services, engineering/surveying, environmental analysis, or similar fields, involving regular public contact.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE
A driver’s license is not required, but the employee must be able to arrange for reliable and timely transportation to offsite facilities and public outreach events to complete essential functions.
