We are looking for a visionary and experienced Chief Technology Officer (CTO) to lead technological strategy, development, and innovation initiatives. This includes a strong background in Artificial Intelligence (AI). The CTO will lead the long-term technology roadmap, focusing on AI opportunities to drive product innovation, enhance operational efficiency, and maintain a competitive edge. As a member of the executive leadership team, the Chief Technology Officer will report to the CEO, partner closely with other Executive Leadership Team (ELT) members, and act as the technology partner to the senior leadership team. This individual will be critical for building capacity within the technology organization as the company accelerates through its next phase of growth.
Successful candidates will possess deep expertise in technology, AI, and product development across all core competencies and will have prior experience as a CTO / Head of Engineering. Proven experience and the ability to build a high performing, world class development organization to meet the scalability, functionality and business goals of the company will be a critical objective for the role.
This position can be based out of our HQ in Portland, OR, or remote from anywhere in the U.S.
Essential Responsibilities & Duties:
Software Engineering and Innovation
- Develop and articulate a comprehensive AI strategy aligned with business goals, leading the design and deployment of scalable AI systems, overseeing research and development of new AI technologies, and ensuring ethical development and deployment of AI initiatives.
- Assess and recommend technologies for the present, short-term and long- term.
- Advocate for technology and quality while continuously improving both process and people.
- Ensure products and platforms deliver a high-quality experience for all end-users.
- Work with our Director of InfoSec to create and maintain an appropriate emphasis on security practices and policies.
- Contribute expertise to the assessment of current and potential partners and lead the integration and meshing of product plans.
- Deploy real-time performance and monitoring of the applications software and associated systems.
- Lead build vs. buy decisions that align with the technology strategy and the goals of the business and its shareholders.
Leadership and Management
- Mentor and cultivate technology leadership
- Recruit, coach, and manage a high-performing team of software developers, architects, cloud engineers, and other professionals to deliver best in class technology.
- Foster a culture of growth and development with a low-ego, customer- centric approach.
- Drive the overall performance management of the technology and Security teams, including creating clear expectations with respect to goals, tasks, and desired outcomes, monitoring progress, coaching teams, and conducting timely performance reviews to ensure all expectations are met.
- Work with our VP of Product to help scope, refine and plan key feature adds and product improvements, and lead the teams who are responsible for delivering on that vision.
- Influence organizational culture by integrating the company’s values into technology strategy, communication, and decision-making
- Champion a culture of trust, collaboration, and continuous learning across engineering, product, and cross-functional teams
Executive Team Membership
- Define and implement the structure, process, tools, metrics, and communications channels necessary to provide transparency into the product development process.
- Develop, monitor, and manage the annual operating and capital budgets for the technology function while also focusing on the creation of competitive advantage and customer / shareholder value.
- Report progress, priorities, and opportunities within the development org to Board Members, stakeholders, management, staff, partners, customers, and users.
- Report progress and insights to the executive team using clear quantitative metrics, ensuring visibility and predictability on process, surfacing impediments and risks, and proposing mitigations with clear options and tradeoffs.
- Act as a key member of the AI governance committee.
SaaS Product Delivery and Reliability
- Work with the technical team to ensure scalability, availability, cost efficiency (FinOps), and redundancy of infrastructure to ensure meeting our SLA and protecting the user experience.
- Oversee monitoring and alerting of the application and underlying infrastructure.
- Ensure on-call engineering coverage and response.
- Ensure Disaster Recovery (DR) scenarios, plans and drills are in place, documented, and practiced.
- Assess system vulnerability and develop remedies.

Qualifications:
- 10+ years of leadership experience in software engineering or related work experience in an enterprise product context
- Deep experience & expertise in the development and successful deployment of highly scalable B2B cloud-based SaaS platforms and products using a modern tech stack
- Functional depth of knowledge in technology and product development across all core competencies and at least 2 prior experiences as a CTO / Head of Engineering.
- Demonstrated ability to work closely and productively with other functional leaders and internal teams including product, sales, marketing, finance, and operations.
- Demonstrated success in the development and optimization of world-class engineering and technical teams
- Expertise in Software Development methodologies and tools. Knowledge and practice of modern Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) methods.
- Comprehensive understanding of QA methodologies and their context within the SDLC framework including feature-driven test case development and test automation.
- Experience designing, developing, modernizing, and supporting SaaS-based enterprise software applications. Prior experience with Enterprise risk management or supply chain tracking business applications is a plus.
- Experience leading new product development efforts through the entire development lifecycle, from initial concept to general availability.
- Commercial Orientation - Deep understanding of the business, product, and customers. Able to align broad technical trends and initiatives with the company’s overall strategy, goals, and objectives.
- Product Development Practices and Procedures - Proven success improving development practices and procedures, implementing the appropriate amount of process and rigor to increase quality and velocity. Demonstrated ability to set, monitor and improve coding standards and development metrics.

The salary range for this role is $270,000 - $290,000 a year.
