About the Department

Performs intermediate technical work in the inspection of building ensuring compliance with Fire Code. Does related work as required. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Emergency Management Director/ Fire Marshall.

Position Duties

Inspects buildings; prepare and maintain detailed records.

The following functions are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.

Inspects building within the jurisdiction of the county for compliance with state and local fire codes.

Explain code violations to the business owners, and provide advice concerning corrective action plans.

Prepares fire inspection reports, maintain computerized files within software collection program, assists with and participates in the design of evacuation plans for all types of buildings.

Monitor fire and evacuation drills in certain buildings.

Respond to complaints regarding fire code violations and fire hazards.

Perform other related emergency response duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

General knowledge of fire administration. Thorough knowledge of modern firefighting techniques and equipment; general knowledge of rescue operations. Techniques, equipment and training; thorough knowledge of the laws and regulations relating to the control and prevention of fire; ability to prepare and review reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, other officials, and the general public.
This is heavy work requiring the exertion of up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pulling and lifting; vocal communication is required by means of the spoken word to convey detailed or important instructions to other receive information. Visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, peripheral vision, preparing written or computer data, operation of machines, motor vehicles or equipment or equipment. The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions and oils. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required personal protective equipment.

Other Qualifications

NC Level I Fire Inspector or able to obtain within 24 months and Level II Fire Inspector within 36 Months of this appointment or as courses are offered through NC Department of Insurance; possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license. Preferred NC Firefighter Certification. Preferred NC EMT- B Certification issued by the North Carolina Board of Medical Examiners. Must take Oath of Office. This is a part-time position with 15-20 hours per week.
