About the Department

The Transportation Assistant Director performs administrative and managerial duties involved in overseeing the Operations division of the Nashville Department of Transportation (NDOT). The incumbent will be responsible for strategic oversight and daily management of transportation operations across the department, including roadway maintenance, traffic operations, parking & TLC enforcement, special events, and inclement weather response. This role ensures safe, efficient, and cost-effective transportation systems while supporting the department’s mission to provide reliable infrastructure and mobility services. The position requires close coordination with other internal NDOT divisions, external agencies, contractors, and the public. Performs other duties as assigned. 

Position Duties

  1. Assists in planning, organizing, and directing the Operations Division of NDOT, including Parking, TLC, Enforcement, Maintenance Inspections, Right of Way and Traffic Operations. 
  2. Coordinates and preplans NDOT emergency response efforts with departmental personnel, various Metro departments, TDOT, and other local stakeholders. 
  3. Supervises division managers and provides guidance on complex operations projects and personnel matters.
  4. Performs duties related to strategic planning, operational oversight, budgeting, and interdepartmental coordination.
  5. Assists in developing and monitoring departmental budgets, forecasts, and capital improvement plans.
  6. Ensures the delivery of high-quality services to the public in a cost-effective and sustainable manner.
  7. Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. 
  8. Ensures compliance from vendors and contractors within Metro’s right of way. 
  9. Ensures compliance with Civil Service Rules and Policies and departmental guidelines.
  10. Fosters a culture of safety, accountability, customer service, and continuous improvement. 
  11. Manages development and maintenance of an applicant pool, evaluation and referral of qualified candidates for hire or promotion throughout Metro.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's Degree in Business, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, or a related field and eight (8) years of professional experience in an administrative, engineering, financial, technical, or related field, including five (5) years of management experience.  *For this position, management experience must include supervision of employees.*

Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.

Other Qualifications

  1. Experience as an HR Generalist or proven experience in staffing, employee relations, or workforce development
  2. Experience in fleet procurement and budget management
  3. Experience with fleet management systems and data analytics
  4. Experience with emergency response and Emergency Operations Center (EOC) coordination
  5. Experience with Department of Transportation (DOT)’s manuals, specifications, and guidelines for building programs; Training for Local Government Manual; and Right-of-Way/Consultant Engineering Inspection
