With community residents leading the way, the mission of Cypress  Hills Local Development Corporation (CHLDC) is to build a strong, sustainable Cypress Hills/East New York, where youth and adults  achieve educational and economic success, secure healthy and  affordable housing, and develop leadership skills to transform their lives and community.  

 

CHLDC has an opening for one (1) full-time Family & Student Engagement Specialist in the College Success division at the Franklin K. Lane Campus. Community Schools is a strategy to  organize resources and share leadership to integrate social  services into the fabric of the schools. Community Schools are  equipped to better serve the needs of families so that students  come to school ready and able to learn. This is a salaried, exempt position.

 

Community Schools offer a holistic approach toward improving academic performance driven by strong, collaborative partnerships among principals, parents, teachers and CBOs. In Community Schools, parents are real and active partners in their children's education, the school climate is joyful and positive, and expanded learning opportunities are standard. An integral part of this approach is the integration and alignment of school- and community-based services throughout an expanded learning day (such as health, mental health, counseling and academic enrichment).

 

Principal Duties:

  • Plan, coordinate, and implement Family Engagement programming at Brooklyn Lab School (BLS)
  • Work with parent coordinator to facilitate parent support group meetings for all families at BLS
  • Partner with Parent Coordinator to serve as school liaisons to the Parents' Association
  • Participate in weekly attendance meetings as necessary and monthly School Leadership Team (SLT) meetings
  • Support BLS staff in conducting and completing home visits to families and report on visit outcomes
  • Represent Community Schools at middle school recruitment events both on campus and off-site
  • Maintain an ongoing relationship with parents while their child attends our school
  • Inform families of community resources that could provide needed assistance
  • Work collaboratively with the Guidance Counselor, Parent Coordinator, Attendance  Coordinator, and Principal, supporting the team in connecting students to resources and effective supports
  • Play an active role in school events and initiatives that support student enrollment, attendance and graduation
  • Actively participate in all data collection processes including inputting information into required databases and sharing it with the staff.
  • Support in classrooms when needed
  • Demonstrate a commitment to school reform work
  • Support the work of Community School team members and BLS administration
  • Represent program to funders; meet all reporting requirements for funding sources
  • Demonstrate commitment to leadership development, community building, and community organizing as strategies for social change.
  • Attend all required division and agency meetings
  • Other duties as requested.  

 

Position Requirements:

  • Bi-lingual Spanish Preferred, written and verbal
  • Commitment to youth development perspective.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills to work and interact effectively with a diverse community of stakeholders
  • A self-starting team player with excellent organizational skills
  • Familiar with the community and support agencies
  • Flexible and adaptable to meet the needs of the students, teachers, and families
  • Flexible hours to accommodate work in the evening and some weekends
  • Experience working with families that have diverse cultures and economic backgrounds
  • Ability to work effectively with school aged youth, educators, families, and communities from a wide range of cultural, social, and economic backgrounds.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, with strong relationship building skills.
  • Must clear DOE fingerprinting and background authorizations.

 

Compensation:

  • $53,000  annually, dependent upon experience.
