About the Department

****Applicants seeking short-term or part-time work with the University of Hawai’i may apply for Casual Hire positions, which include administrative professional and technical (APT) or Instructional-type positions.  Because of the temporary nature of these appointments, Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits as provided to regular BOR and Civil Service employees such as paid leave and holidays.  Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for full-time employees and up to one calendar year for part-time employees.

Other Conditions:  To begin approximately September 2025; pending availability of funds and actual staffing requirements.  Assignments may include day, evening, and/or weekends and will require traveling to Leeward CC’s Wai?anae Moku campus and other UH campuses and sites.


Description of Duties:

  1. Support the mission of the campus’ Mental Health & Wellness Program in providing the highest quality, accessible, and culturally competent mental health services & wellness services to enhance students' social-emotional well-being and success in achieving both academic and life goals.
  2. Provide scheduled, direct face-to-face or online specialized, short-term, focused, goal-oriented psychotherapeutic services to students, in individual or group settings, who have a wide range of psychiatric and psychosocial behavioral problems.
  3. Implement appropriate research-based interventions and techniques to assist students in achieving their- individualized goals and outcomes, ie, reducing distress and increasing coping skills which enhance academic performance, and build self-efficacy and support in their natural environment.
  4. Timely documentation of clinical interventions and treatment progress notes, maintain program forms, clinical charts, program evaluation, and data collection as required by the program and their licensed profession.
  5. Participate actively on the College's Title IX program.
  6. Serve as the mental health subject matter expert for individual cases on the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT). **Provides clinical consultation and technical assistance to other staff and employees regarding the specialized needs of students; and identifying and implementing improved methods, policies, procedures, standards, and interventions, including problem solving for difficult and complex cases.
  7. Train, oversee and/or supervise graduate-level interns and/or practicum students, as appropriate.
  8. Work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team with program staff, administration, instructors, and other colleagues.
  9. Practice with a commitment to the highest ethical standards of professional practice, as well as personal and professional integrity.
  10. Maintain a State of Hawaii license for their appropriate profession and act in a manner consistent with the code of ethics of their licensed profession and State of Hawaii statutes.
  11. Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Possession of a master's degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or a related field and three (3) years of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Mental Health Counselor; Marriage and Family Therapist or Psychologist; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  2. Current State of Hawaii license as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Mental Health Counselor or Marriage and Family Therapy.
  3. Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques in the area of professional Mental Health counseling as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standards and evolving concepts, principles, and methodologies.
  4. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations, and theories and systems associated with mental health counseling.
  5. Demonstrated ability to resolve wide-ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative, and timely manner.
  6. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally, and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  7. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  8. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing software, and Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, and other commonly used software.
  9. Demonstrated understanding of issues related to Native Hawaiians or other indigenous populations.
  10. Demonstrated ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks with conflicting deadlines.
  11. Demonstrated ability to analyze, interpret, and use sound logic and judgment when applying administrative policies and procedures.
  12. Demonstrated ability to produce work that is detail-oriented, accurate, neat, and organized and must be able to follow up on assigned tasks through satisfactory completion
  13. Demonstrated ability to work outside of normal working hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.


Desired Qualifications:

  1. Doctoral degree in psychology or educational psychology from a regionally accredited institution of higher education or in clinical psychology from an American Psychological Association (APA) approved program in clinical psychology and current State of Hawai'i license as a Psychologist.
  2. Demonstrated ability to intervene in crisis situations using sound professional judgment, and ethical practice.
  3. Demonstrated ability to work successfully in an environment with a wide range of personalities and needs, while maintaining a positive attitude.
  4. Familiarity and experience with UH policies and procedures
  5. Display strong organizational skills for handling cases
  6. Understands the College’s mission and special commitment to student success.
