About the Department
The Victim Advocate and Community Engagement Specialist, under the direction of the Office of Professional Standards and Community Engagement, supports victims of crime, abuse, and trauma by providing advocacy. This position ensures victims are informed of their rights, connected to appropriate resources, and supported throughout legal or healing processes. The Victim Advocate and Engagement Specialist fosters strong relationships between the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety and local, state, and community organizations. Additionally, the role assists with developing an understanding of community needs.
Position Duties
- Provide emotional support, crisis intervention, and short-term counseling to victims of crime or trauma.
- Educate victims about their rights and available legal, medical, and social services.
- Assist with filing police reports, restraining orders, compensation claims, and other legal documents.
- Accompany victims to court hearings, law enforcement interviews, or medical appointments.
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical and legal standards when handling sensitive information.
- Collaborate with law enforcement, legal professionals, healthcare providers, and community organizations.
- Conduct outreach and education activities to raise awareness about victim rights and available resources.
- Maintain and compile accurate statistics, case records, reports, and documentation in accordance with organizational protocols.
- Provide support to individuals and groups by connecting them with appropriate community resources and coordinating referrals.
- Act as an outreach liaison with non-profit and community organizations, neighborhood groups, business groups, and educational institutions.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Strong interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituents in a diverse community.
- Ability to maintain confidential and sensitive information.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional and legal documents.
- Ability to effectively present information to internal and external stakeholders.
- Carry out responsibilities with limited supervision.
- Familiarity with the community, community resources, and the ability to interact effectively and respectfully with people from different cultural backgrounds.
Other Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, criminal justice, human services, or related field (equivalent experience may be considered).
- At least 1–2 years of experience working in a related field
- Valid driver’s license
