Description
The role of the technician is to support pharmacy practice as allowed by the Board of Pharmacy and perform all duties as designated by the pharmacist-in-charge.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Greet and interact with customers with prompt courteous service.
- Professionally respond to customer concerns and questions to ensure a positive customer experience.
- Use courteous and proper telephone etiquette. Answers telephone calls that do not require a pharmacist.
- Maintain customer/patient confidentiality according to HIPAA and company requirements.
- Maintains respectful relationships with coworkers.
- Process prescriptions including translation of written directions, product selection, counting and measuring medications, placing medication into dispensing container, and labeling container.
- Resolve third party claim rejections by making necessary telephone calls and complete any manual claim forms.
- Perform register transactions in adherence to policy and procedures, including cash, check and charge transactions.
- Prepare medications upon completion of transaction for dispensing at the counter or for shipping to rural clinic(s).
- Perform all prescription pick-up procedures, including documentation in Prescription Pick-Up Log, validation of customer address.
- Offer patient counseling as required by law.
- Comply with federal and state laws, rules and regulations.
- Comply with company policies and procedures.
- File and process prescriptions in accordance with federal and state laws.
- Maintain an organized and clean working environment.
- Operate computer software to enter, process and retrieve prescription information.
- Perform duties of front store operations, filling prescriptions, and shipping services.
- File medication invoices, including controlled substance invoices, as required by law and directed by pharmacist-in-charge.
- Assist with maintaining adequate inventory by utilizing replenishment reports and procedures.
- Remove expired or damaged medications on a monthly basis.
- Assists and supports inventory management by ordering, unpacking, checking and storing received medication shipments.
- Maintain good relationship with clinic management and clinical staff.
- Complete are required training programs as scheduled and at least annually.
- Maintain proper medication storage conditions and maintain temperature logs as required.
- Perform prescription billing requirements for different payors, including commercial, Medicaid, and Medicare-D.
- Performs other duties and tasks as assigned by pharmacist-in-charge.
- Maintains knowledge and skill in healthcare and pharmacy, including latest medication or pharmacy law information.
Requirements
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- High school graduate. Preference will be given to individuals who have college credits.
- Holds an active license in good standing from the Texas Board of Pharmacy.
- Current certification by Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).
- Minimum of one year of practice in retail, ambulatory, or hospital outpatient settings.

- Excellent oral communication skills to communicate with prescribers and patients.
- Demonstrates courteous and professional customer service skills.
- Demonstrates current knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations that pertain to scope of practice.
- Demonstrates computer skills necessary to process and dispense prescription medications.
- Understand quality control procedures and confidentiality requirements.
- Proficient in MS Word and Excel software.
