Position Summary

This position requires the Laboratory Assistant Administrative Director to Provide Laboratory services to meet the needs of patients as ordered by the medical staff and performed in accordance with accepted standards and practices; direct, supervise, and coordinate functions and activities in any or all divisions of the Clinical Laboratory The Laboratory Assistant Administrative Director will provide effective leadership for activities necessary to ensure communication, training, competency assessment and ongoing compliance monitoring with requirements under the Laboratory‘s quality management system. 

Job Duties & Essential Functions

  • Consult with and keep Laboratory Administrative Director informed of activities, needs, and problems. Consult with medical staff and other health care providers on matters relating to laboratory services. Assume responsibility for the department in the absence of the Laboratory Administrative Director. 
  • Establish objectives and quality of work performance. Maintain quality control of tests and establish service priorities, work routines, and workflow patterns, and monitor workflow to assure prompt and efficient delivery of services. 
  • Establish and implement policies and procedures to achieve department objectives. Perform cost analyses on equipment purchases, reagents rental agreements, lease, purchase, etc.
  • Serve as resource to administration and staff in problem solving. Address complaints regarding laboratory clinical functions and work with staff to resolve them.
  • Assure compliance by Department personnel with professional and Departmental standards, policies and procedure and requirements of the New York State Department of Health and The Joint Commission. Update department manuals as needed. Participate on committees as required or requested.
  • Assist in selection of personnel. Orient, train, assign, schedule, direct and supervise personnel. Evaluate work performance and recommend personnel actions such as transfers, disciplinary action and termination. Provide counsel, guidance, and instruction. Resolve grievances and problems. Provide in service training and encourage professional growth and development of Laboratory Personnel. 
  • Investigate incidents, take appropriate action and prepare reports maintain good employee and interdepartmental relationsInvestigate new products, equipment, demonstrate and recommend as is appropriateAssure adequate quantities of laboratory supplies, and proper functioning of equipment. Consult with Laboratory Medical Director concerning any problemsPerform duties as needed by the Laboratory Administrative Director.
  • Maintain established hospital and departmental policies, procedures, objectives, safety, environmental and infection control and compliance with requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies. 
  • Subject to many interruptions. May be called at any hour for assistance or conference on difficult problems or immediate decision. 
  • Attend Laboratory meetings as requiredMaintain professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, or laboratory programs. 

Required Education & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or related science from an accredited college or university
  • Certified by internship and examination from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists as a registered Medical Technologist
  • Current New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist license
  • Must have a minimum of five (5) years hospital experience post NYS technologist license
  • Proven managerial skills, accreditation requirements, ability to coordinate operations of technical and office staff, ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with many departments as well as the community and outside agencies

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate with patients, office staff and medical providers. The employee must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.   

  • Communicate orally and written. 
  • Use telecommunication devices. 
  • Must have fine motor dexterity to complete bimanual/bilateral tasks. 
  • Ability to stoop, bend, and lift twenty (20) liter containers. 
  • Exposed to the danger of infection or harm from pathogenic material or chemicals. 
  • Occasional prolonged standing or walking. Subject to eyestrain.

Anticipated Pay Range: 

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established based on relevant experience. The above salary range (or hiring range) represents SBEILH’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Prior to start date, the selected candidate must meet the following requirements:

  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Eastern Long Island’s Employee Health Services *
  • Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
  • Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen*
  • Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre-employment screenings.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer. 

 

*The Human Resources department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination.
