Position Summary:

 

As an Operating Room Nurse at our Ambulatory Surgery Center, you will play a crucial role in the surgical team by providing exceptional nursing care to patients of all ages undergoing surgical procedures. Your responsibilities will encompass the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care within the operating room. You will adhere to nursing standards of practice and the center’s policies and ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality care to patients. Effective communication with physicians, patients, family members, and the multidisciplinary team will be essential in this role.

 

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

 

  • Conduct pre-operative assessments to gather pertinent patient information.
  • Ensure patients are prepared for surgery, addressing physical and emotional needs.
  • Develop an individualized perioperative plan of care.
  • Implement the plan of care using the following interventions:
    • Protect patient from injury caused by chemical, electrical, laser, positioning, thermal sources, and extraneous objects.
    • Perform count procedures to protect patients from unintended retained foreign objects.
    • Perform intervention necessary to ensure patient’s procedure is performed on the correct site, side, and level.
    • Perform interventions to maintain patient's wound and tissue perfusion at or above baseline levels.
    • Perform interventions to maintain the status of the patient’s genitourinary, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, endocrine, respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological systems, and fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balances at or above baseline levels.
    • Perform interventions to ensure the patient is at or returned to normothermia at the conclusion of the immediate postoperative period.
    • Perform interventions to protect patient from infection.
    • Assess knowledge level of patient or designated support person and provide education regarding the expected psychosocial response, nutritional management, medication management, pain management, wound management, and expected responses to the operative or invasive procedure.
    • Actively involve patient or designated support person in decisions affecting his or her perioperative plan of care and the recovery process.
    • Protect patients’ rights, dignity, and privacy.
    • Provide culturally competent, age-appropriate, ethical care within legal standards of practice.
    • Provide consistent and comparable care regardless of the setting.
  • Administer medications, anesthesia, and other treatments as ordered.
  • Monitor patients throughout surgical procedures, assessing vital signs and response to anesthesia.
  • Assist in positioning patients and maintaining a sterile field.
  • Document patient progress and any complications.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team to adjust care plans as necessary.
  • Effectively communicate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other team members.
  • Provide clear and empathetic communication to patients and their families.
  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting of patient status.
  • Adhere to nursing standards of practice and center policies.
  • Maintain aseptic techniques and ensure infection control measures are followed.
  • Assist in emergency situations and follow appropriate protocols.

Qualifications


Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor of Science (BSN) from an accredited school of nursing or ADN with commensurate experience.
  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
  • Certification in perioperative nursing (CNOR) preferred.
  • BLS | ACLS | PALS certification.
  • Minimum of three years of operating room nursing experience in an ambulatory surgery center preferred.
  • Urology or surgical experience preferred but not essential.

  • Knowledge of surgical procedures, instrumentation, and sterile techniques.

  • Comfortable asking probing questions to patients.

  • Maintain & adhere to HIPAA compliance/ regulations.
  • Knowledge of medical models and Familiarity with anatomy, pharmacology, pathophysiology, clinical medicine, and physical diagnosis.

Physical Requirements for the Job:

 

  • Regularly required to sit and stand for extended periods.
  • Involves standing, sitting, walking, bending, stooping, and twisting.
  • Requires full range of body motion, including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
  • May be required to help to transfer the patient.
  • Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 lbs.

 

OSHA Exposure Classification: Category I - Job tasks involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues. All necessary precautions and PPE are provided to minimize exposure risk.
