Transportation Specialist I

Provides technical expertise and coordination for transportation programs involving design, building construction projects, construction of transportation systems, traffic operations, maintenance of highways and facilities, or bridge inspection and appraisal in accordance with Department standards. Assists with project planning and the development of policies and procedures for area of responsibility. Work requires contact with governmental officials, consultants, contractors and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Transportation Specialist II

Provides technical expertise and coordination for transportation programs involving multiple design and/or building construction projects, construction of transportation systems, traffic operations, maintenance of highways and facilities, or bridge inspection and appraisal in accordance with Department standards. Assists with project planning and the development of policies and procedures for area of responsibility. Work requires contact with governmental officials, consultants, contractors and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Transportation Specialist III

Provides technical expertise and coordination for transportation programs involving multiple design and/or advanced building construction projects, construction of transportation systems, traffic operations, maintenance of highways and facilities, or bridge inspection and appraisal in accordance with Department standards. Assists with project planning and oversight, and the development of policies and procedures for area of responsibility. Work requires contact with governmental officials, consultants, contractors and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Essential Duties for Transportation Specialist I:

  • Assists in prioritizing and scheduling projects.
  • Assists with project assignments and determining work requirements to complete project plans and coordinates scheduling to accommodate projects already underway.
  • Assists with project design involving design calculations and sketches of plans, layouts and typical sections.
  • Coordinates compilation of complete plan packages for submission to the responsible engineer or architect for review and signature.
  • Coordinates design work among TxDOT entities, consultants and contractors.
  • Develops site layouts utilizing engineering workstations and software.
  • Evaluates and analyzes design issues.
  • May serve as a lead worker and the related tasks.

Additional Duties for Transportation Specialist II:

  • Represents the Department at various meetings.
  • Reviews and oversees plan packages submitted by consultants.

Additional Duties for Transportation Specialist III:

  • Assists in overseeing project assignments and determining work requirements to complete project plans and coordinates scheduling to accommodate projects already underway.
  • Assists in overseeing project design involving design calculations and sketches of plans, layouts and typical sections.
  • Evaluates and analyzes complex design issues.
  • Assists in prioritizing and scheduling projects.
  • Performs data collection, evaluations, analyses, studies, inspections, forecasts, assessments, and/or plan development.
  • Researches and evaluates data, interprets and analyzes results, prepares reports and recommends solutions to problems.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education - Transportation Specialist I, II, or III: Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline. Relevant experience may be substituted for education on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Experience:

Transportation Specialist I: 2 years transportation design, construction, traffic operations, maintenance, bridge inspection experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). 

Transportation Specialist II: 4 years transportation design, construction, traffic operations, maintenance, bridge inspection experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). 

Transportation Specialist III: 5 years transportation design, construction, traffic operations, maintenance, bridge inspection experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). 

Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

  • Planning, coordinating and handling multiple projects within area of responsibility to meet short- and long-term deadlines
  • Using computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems
  • Exercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; makes decisions that
    support business objectives and goals
