About the Department
Responsible for overseeing the administrative duties in the Vet Clinic and ensuring that the clinic operates efficiently and smoothly. Ensures that the clinic is following state and federal regulations as well as best practices as outlined by the Association of Shelter Veterinarians Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters. Work is performed under the supervision of the Manager of Operations. Technical guidance may be exercised over department staff.
Position Duties
- Oversees surgery scheduling, inventory, supply ordering and monitors Vet Clinic spending
- Maintains drug records in accordance with state and federal regulations
- Oversees clinic workflow to ensure efficiency
- Assists in the educational development of volunteers, interns, and new clinic employees
- Works with TJO management to develop, review, and update Standard Operating Procedures
- Ensures VCA policies, guidelines, and recommendations are implemented by all members of the technical staff
- Functions as a Surgical Veterinary Technician, ensuring care is being performed to the highest standards at all times
- Provide technical and clinical expertise in order to effectively assess, induce, monitor and stabilize all surgical, emergent and urgent case types.
- Produce diagnostic radiographs
- Utilize different modalities of imaging for patient assessment
- Physical examinations and patient assessment
- Surgical preparation and assistance
- Providing skilled & compassionate care
- Vaccinate, medicate, draw blood and perform humane euthanasia of shelter animals.
- Preforms other related duties as required.
- Supervise, train, and schedule volunteers and interns
- Expand internship opportunities with local universities
- Preforms other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Proficient in medical calculations
- Ability and skill to deal with unruly, vicious and dangerous animals in a humane manner
- Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills that enable them to develop and foster long term positive working relationships with colleagues, clients, and the community
- Work well independently and in a team environment where colleagues lead by example and hold themselves accountable for quality medicine
- Flexible, cooperative, dependable, responsible, and good time-management skills to work in a fast-paced environment where you can utilize high level skills and be an integral part of the medical team
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail
- Ability to monitor budgets
- Ability and skill to deal with unruly, vicious, and dangerous animals in a humane manner
Other Qualifications
- Certified Surgical Technician AND a minimum of one (1) year experience; OR a minimum of three (3) years’ experience if not certified
- Certified Veterinary Technician preferred
- Minimum of one year supervisory experience.
