About the Department

Incumbents apply a broad level of knowledge of the Yaqui Language and its Culture. Duties include developing and implementing curriculum, designing and producing instructional materials and instructing Yaqui language classes.

Position Duties

  • Collaborate with other language instructors to create Yaqui language learning standards, units, and assessments to guide the instruction of the Yaqui Language.
  • Collaborate with other instructors to develop language and cultural resource materials for use in the classrooms and in other educational presentations.
  • Develop and implement curriculum for teaching the Yaqui language to Tribal Community members as well as other approved audiences.
  • Plan, prepare and deliver lesson plans, instructional materials and instructional activities that facilitate interactive learning resulting in language acquisition in accordance with established department procedures.
  • Incorporate various culturally relevant instructional methods to teach the Yaqui language to students and Pascua Yaqui community members.
  • Record and synthesize student progress.
  • Attend all language instruction sessions.
  • Maintain organization of curricular materials, handouts, classroom schedules, equipment care etc.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level as requested by supervisor or director.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Writing and speaking the Yaqui language;
  • Phonology and phonetics of the Yaqui language;
  • Instructional methods and practices;
  • Recordkeeping principles;
  • English and Hiaki language, grammar, and punctuation;
  • Applicable federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations;
  • Yaqui culture, customs, traditions, community resources and a willingness to continue learning.

    Skills and Abilities:
  • Prepare and present Yaqui language curriculum in a variety of formats;
  • Apply fundamental principles of Teacher Education including Instructional methods, and practices;
  • Maintain files and records;
  • Provide excellent customer service;
  • Coordinate outreach efforts in assigned Yaqui communities;
  • Handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines;
  • Interact and maintain effective working relationship with employees, the public and outside public agencies;
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing;
  • Operate a variety of office equipment, including a computer and related software applications;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with co-workers, supervisor, management, Council members and the general public. Ability to sufficiently exchange or convey information and receive verbal and written work instructions.

Other Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED and three (3) years of experience related to job tasks; and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

And
  • Requires ability to read and write the Yaqui Language at a level that would allow the incumbent to perform the duties listed;
  • Ability to understand Spanish is preferred;
  • Must be an enrolled member of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe;
  • Preferably a member or have been a member of a Cultural Society.
Special Requirements:
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver's License. 
  • Must have a current Level 1 Arizona Clearance Card. Failure to maintain a current Level 1 Clearance Card will result in removal from this position. 
  • Must provide at least three (3) business related reference letters. 
  • Must pass a background check and drug test; fingerprinting requirement determined by funding and sensitivity of position.
