SUMMARY: Provide health care to students needing basic first aid, dispense medication as delegated by a registered nurse and requested by a health care provider and parent. Evaluate ill students and contact parents as needed. Provide care in emergency situations and contact parents and/or legal guardians as well as the Nurse Consultant when necessary. Record health concerns, immunization and emergency information in the student information system. Implement individual student health care plans guidelines that were prepared, trained, and delegated by Nurse Consultant.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  1. Provide basic first aid, monitor illness and injury and notify parents of concerns. Contact 911 in emergency situations. Follow guidelines given when to call 911.
  2. Record daily log of use of clinic and daily duties. Record and update health concerns, medication, and emergency information in student information system and student health files. Administer and record dates and times of medications given, following state Medication Administration Policy as well as the Nurse Consultant’s medication delegation procedure.
  3. Maintain accurate and current student clinic files for each student, including, but not limited to medications, immunizations, vision and hearing referral letters, etc.
  4. Complete screening information following the guidelines established by a school Registered Nurse as required by the state on all special education students Individual Education Plans (IEP’s) and complete information in the student information system.
  5. Delegation by a Nurse Consultant may be made to assist students with, but not limited to students with disabilities, asthma related problems, severe allergy problems, students with diabetes (insulin injections, glucose monitoring, glucogon IM injections), students that need assistance with toileting assistance, and seizure medications.
  6. Provide staff with student health concerns and emergency information as necessary and appropriate.
  7. Update immunization records and enforce state immunization requirements.
  8. Organize and/or assist with complete vision and hearing on students as required by the state. Enter screening data in the student information system. Continue to follow-up with students until all are tested. Create and mail parent referral letters.
  9. Arrange field trip medication to be given by the teachers to the students as well as if a student with special needs (example but not limited to diabetes) needs delegated staff to attend the field trip make appropriate arrangements for this to occur.
  10. Monitor and maintain the AED machine and needs of the AED machine.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned including cleaning clinic, maintaining equipment, ordering supplies, compiling and preparing reports.
  12. Assist staff with job related injuries, following workers’ compensation protocols.
  13. Maintain a professional working relationship between health clinics at each campus, including, but not limited to sharing of information, maintaining consistent best practices, and a willingness to work at each campus.
  14. Other duties as assigned.

North Campus Specific

  1. Responsible for attendance clerk procedures as outlined in that job description, and assigned by supervisor. Mail attendance letters once provided by Senior Administration.
  2. Supervise students in the cafetorium during breakfast.
  3. May cover the receptionist during the receptionist lunch and break times.

Requirements

EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience preferred.
  • Experience in health care and working with children preferred.
  • Certified Nurse Aide preferred.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS or CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Criminal background check required for hire.
  • CPR, First Aid, AED and Universal Precautions certifications required prior to first day working with students as well as must be maintained as required by dates given by certified individual.
  • Prior to first day working with students must complete Medication Administration class every 3 years and delegation by the Nurse Consultant every year.

TECHNICAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES:

  • Problem solving skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job and follow HIPPA and FERPA laws.
  • Knowledgeable in Colorado School Law, Authorizer policies, The Academy mission, philosophies, policies and administrative procedures.
  • Ability to communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with people from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds.
  • Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow Universal Precautions, safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT OPERATING KNOWLEDGE:

  • Operating knowledge of and experience with personal computers and peripherals.
  • Operating knowledge of and experience with typical office equipment, such as telephones, copier, fax machine, e-mail etc.
  • Operating knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Word.
  • Operating knowledge of basic health screening equipment required within one month after entering position.
  • Operating knowledge of disinfectants required.
  • Operating knowledge of and experience with student information system preferred, required within 2 weeks of entering position.
  • Operating knowledge and access to Colorado State Immunization site for students’ records within 1 month of entering position.
